Courage is an important element conveyed in this novel which is portrayed by many characters such as Miss Maudie.ss A devastating accident occurs when Miss Maudies’ home burns down due to a fire late at night. And yet Miss Maudie is able to stay optimistic towards this unfortunate event and instead comfort Jem and Scout. “Always wanted a smaller house, Jem Finch.” She does not show remorse to herself but looks on the bright side of things rather than mourning over something that she cannot change. Lee effectively symbolises the inspiring role of Miss Maudie and emphasises how buoyant she is. “Just think, I’ll have more room for my azaleas now !” Miss Maudie is even staying positive about her plants, despite that gardening is a big part of her life. It is depicted by many characters in the novel. Miss Maudie is one them, she stays optimistic to anything that goes wrong. Even her home burning down. Atticus is courageous at many times such as when he is faced with the mad dog. Atticus is the one to take it down and afterwards he does not want his children to think he has courage, simply because he used a gun. Mrs Dubouse is truly brave as she gives up her addiction to morphine to leave the world sin free. Atticus takes on Tom Robinsons case, standing up to the town of Maycomb. Atticus values his morality and he knows he is unlikely to win the case, however he has faith to keep him going and does not give up.
