In his novel Feed, M. T. Anderson portrays a society so affected by capitalism, consumerism, and environmental damage, that humanity is no longer able to remember what the world was like before major corporations turned the entire human experience into a means of making a profit. As a potential future, this is entirely possible, considering the current economic and environmental climates that are suffering as a direct result of late capitalism and the disaffectedness of the corporations causing the most damage. Feed explores issues perpetuated by these major corporations that have become far more prevalent in today’s world such as the effect climate change has on our planet, the preying on the sick and dying, and the harmful and often dangerous…

Consumerism. The drive which makes us feel like we need everything, no matter what the eventual costs and problems would create. “Swollen Expectations,” an article that looks into the effects of consumerism and different ways it has changed our lives, claims that our generation sets higher material expectations than any other generation. Some will argue that this isn’t the case, and that our world is changing for the better. However, I would disagree with those arguments.…

However, as Andre Siegfried has observed, a “new society” was forming in the United States due to the increase in mass consumption. Consumerism had led to a set standard of living in the United States, and citizens considered it a “…sacred acquisition, which they will defend at any price” (Foner 762). Americans were now fully willing to go into debt in the name of consumerism, as long as they acquired the products…

Humans use resources without thinking of the consequence that it might or will bring. Although renewable resources are continuously being produced by the earth, everything eventually has its limits. For example, Global warming is a major issue in today’s society, ice is melting and the ozone hole is expanding due to pollution caused by our population. Our societies actions are starting chain reactions without accepting the we are the producers. The population is not aware of the damage we are placing upon the earth which leads to the question of “what’s next?”…

I will use this article to demonstrate how materialism has negative impacts on social satisfaction. The wiki entries “Identity and America” (2012) and “The chasing of the American dream” (2009) similarly examined the flaws of The American Dream. They discuss the economic, political, and social issues defined in Thompson’s novel. I will use these essays to support the idea that the consumer-capitalist ways of the world have serious…

Consumerism Consumes Us Several different forms of literature, such as novels and movies, can teach audiences about the meaning of life, while giving people ideas about how they should live their life. The movie, Dawn of the Dead, by George A. Romero, and the novel, Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley greatly intertwine to send a strong message about the values of most people in our American society today, and about how this new set of beliefs changed ourselves and our society from the strong one that we once had. Although conforming to society and being materialistic can have positive effects, it consumes people into barely acting human-like.…

In A Consumers' Republic: The Politics of Mass Consumption in Postwar America, author Lizabeth Cohen focuses on how the American culture of abundance and consumption influenced many political, socioeconomic and cultural changes in the decades proceeding the end of World War II. She argues that mass consumerism is deeply rooted in the modern American experience. Cohen first uses the prologue of A Consumers' Republic to introduce her own personal story, having grown up during the beginnings of the age of mass consumption. She claims that the purpose of including her personal story was not to demonstrate it's uniqueness, but instead insinuates that it was something along the lines of a common experience in the middle of the 20th century.…

Modern times offer a very diverse way of expressing oneself. The expression of a single person who consumes more than they need may not be enough to hurt the environment; however, the overproduction of harmful waste from big business is big enough to impact the environment. Critically acclaimed author Anna Lappé describes the climate crisis through the food production industry in a sector of industry where people rarely scrutinize in her article “The Climate Crisis at the End of Our Fork.” In a very different, yet scarily similar way Carolyn Merchant metaphorically describes the problems with modern human tendency and desires through the image of a shopping mall in “Eden Commodified.”…

This work is a commentary on society today, and shares ideas with many books we have read this year. Books like Siddhartha show the world’s current obsession with material wealth and material things hen Siddhartha tries life as a merchant. Or Faustus, the character who sold his soul to the devil for promises of infinite amounts of material wealth. Or in As I Lay dying, the character Anse is obsessed with obtaining his new dentures even after all the trouble his family went through. Oscar Wilde is a big believer in society’s obsession in material, useless thing instead of things of importance.…

Rachel Lowry writes in her essay “Straddling Online and Offline Profiles, Millennials Search for Identity” that according to a recent online study, one out of four Millennials say they can only be their true self when alone (p. 500). But in this modern age of social media and smartphones, are we ever truly alone? Everyone can be connected with people all over the world in a second, and everyone can easily find out information about whoever they want with a simple Google search. Consequently, even if someone shuts off their computer and phone, any personal information they've posted about themselves is still out there for anyone to find. In addition to people constantly sharing aspects of their daily lives on social media, monitoring apps and…

Rarely does one novel connect to multiple generations at once. For a long time this country has moved from being a producing country to consuming country. Every generation has had their fair share of material possession and obsessions. Sometime these objects can cause people to lose sight in what is most important in their lives.
