Apparently, conflict in the society is one of the common themes in literary works. Writers
can use different techniques to show violence or conflict in their stories. In most cases, they
center themes on specific characters. The following essay wishes to discuss the theme of conflict
in “Sweat” by Hurston” with respective focus on the character Delia and in “Tell Them Not to
Kill Me” by Juan Rulfo with respective focus on the character Juvencio. The main characters in
these stories are nothing alike. Delia is a strong hard-working woman who is abused by her
husband. Juvencio is a self-serving man that puts himself first.

In the “Tell Them Not to Kill Me”, the theme of violence is mostly told from the third
person perspective. The narrative starts by the tittle of the story, “Tell Them Not to Kill Me”,
which is a statement made by Juvencio to his son Justino (Rulfo, J., 1953, p.387). In this case,
Juvencio is begging his son to ensure that the Colonel does not kill him. Therefore, from the
beginning, the aspect of violence is mostly associated with Juvencio (Rulfo, J., 1953, p. 388). By
uttering these words, in the presence of a Colonel and the son, the author prepares the reader’s
mind that the story will involve some form of conflict. Therefore, the aspect of suspense is
introduced to the reader at the beginning of this story. The suspense creates the urge of knowing
the kind of conflict that is likely to be experienced and the characters involved.
