Companionship is a term that has several distinct meanings, but only one meaning genuinely stands out. The term companionship is when someone puts everyone else before themselves. George, in Of Mice and Men, is a companion to Lennie, and Lennie is a companion to George. George, Lennie, and Slim portray companionship through each other and through the other men on the ranch. In Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, George, Lennie, and Slim reflect the theme of companionship through heartbreak and reliability, opposition and manipulation, and comfort and reliability. George and Lennie are extensively contradictory of each other. George is small and quick, dark of face, with restless eyes and sharp, strong features. He has small, strong hands, slender arms, and a thin and bony nose. (2) Lennie, on the other hand, is a huge man, shapeless of face, with large, pale eyes, and wide, sloping shoulders(2). George and Lennie’s body features contrast, as well as their personality. Anger, but understanding describes George’s personality. However, Lennie’s personality is described almost like a child. He is loyal and is innocent, likewise, mentally disabled (72). George demonstrates his exasperated personality when he yells at Lennie because Lennie never recalls anything that George says for him to do. George yells at Lennie and says that he would be better off without him and could be living his American dream if it were not for Lennie. Although George is irritated with Lennie, he understands that Lennie cannot help what he does, and felt ashamed about what he said (11). Lennie illustrates his loyalty to George when Crooks says, “Le’s say he wants to come back and can’t. S’pose he gets killed or hurt so he can’t come back.” (71). Lennie immediately stood up and defended George by asking “Who hurt George?” (72).
