Theme Of Collaboration In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet

The world thinks that Romeo and Juliet is a simple and classic love story. They fall in love, get married, then are torn apart by their families, and commit suicide to escape, the end. However, there is something else in this story, hidden behind these lines of dialogue, it is the obsession and desperation of many characters. These characters are the true killers in this story. In one way or the other, they have caused almost every catastrophe in this story, from Romeo and Juliet’s chance meeting at the party, to their deaths. This will resume in chronological order. “Two households, both alike in dignity,/ In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,/ From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,” (prologue 1-3). The houses of Montague and Capulet bear a very ancient grudge, one so old that neither house remembers what caused it. Each side is obsessed with finding a way to gain an advantage over the other. They had even begun to grow desperate to rise of the other. If the grudge did not exist, the events of the play may not have happened, Romeo and Juliet may have still died, but it would have been much less likely. This is not true love in the way most people think it is, their “love” is a form of lust and desire. Romeo and Juliet are just out of puberty, their desires had very much formed their obsession. Romeo’s desires are what drove his obsession about Rosaline. It was after Rosaline chose to be a nun that Romeo had lost interest. Romeo had told Benvolio, “For beauty starved with her severity/ Cuts beauty off from all posterity” (I i 205-206). Romeo realized that he would be unable to marry or have children with Rosaline, and so he moved on to someone else. Lust even caused their haste in Romeo’s marriage to Juliet.
