Hook. In the play Antigone by Sophocles, the eponymous title character buries her brother Polyneices, even though the king had made a law stating that no one shall bury him, as he is a traitor to his state. In the real world, the Taliban tried to ban girls’ schooling in the Swat Valley in Pakistan, and resident Malala Yousafzai spoke up through a blog, fighting for every youth’s right to quality education. She was nearly killed when she was shot by the Taliban; however, she managed to recover. Malala continues to spread activism for human rights around the world today. Civil disobedience is necessary for change because it shows authorities that the unjust laws hurt people and raises awareness in the general public about the issue. Both Antigone and Malala stand up for what they believe in to show their respective authorities that what they are doing is wrong. Antigone buries Polyneices because she believes that “if [she] had left [her] brother Lying in death unburied, [she] should have suffered” (Sophocles 208). In Antigone, Creon’s son Haimon tells him that the citizens of Thebes “say no woman has ever, so unreasonably, Died so shameful a death for a generous act: ‘She covered her brother’s body. Is this indecent?...She should have all the honor that we can give her’”(Sophocles 218-219)! Word about Antigone’s deed of civil disobedience is spread throughout Thebes. The citizens don’t agree with Creon’s law either, and want to honor Antigone for what she did. In Malala’s case, “she went on to become an international spokeswoman for education and human dignity.” She spreads awareness of issues similar to the ban on girls’ education in the Swat Valley to other people around the world. Her purpose is to inspire others to stand up for what they believe in as well, in order to build a better

The article, “Malala the Powerful” by Kristen Lewis describes the torment that many Muslim people, especially women and girls were put through by the Taliban. Malala’s life took place while the Taliban was taking control over places that she lived in or near, Afghanistan and Pakistan. They began enforcing rules that were expected to be obeyed by everyone they were applied to, lots of the time directly enforced to women and girls. For example, in 2009, the Taliban ordered all girls’ schools to close down. Malala was one of the many people who was not okay with these actions, and was determined to stand up for what she knew to be right.…

It may look easy, but there are many hardships that come along with trying to fulfill a goal. Like human rights activists, they are trying to change and improve what’s happening in the world around them; a few of them are Mother Jones, Cesar Chavez, and Malala. In the story of Antigone, the first thing the character Creon does is declare a harsh but understandable law. He proclaims that while the body of Eteocles will be buried with dignity, the corpse of Polyneices will be left to rot on the field of battle. Anyone who attempts to honor Polyneices's body with burial will be sentenced to death. Though Polyneices is Creon’s own family, he does not hold back in punishing him. “Did you by any chance act on the assumption that a daughter of Oedipus, a daughter of Oedipus’ stubborn pride, was above the law?”…

Here, once again, Antigone displays severe disrespect to Creon’s position as king when she explains mockingly that she did not know that “[Creon] had such powers to enable [the powers of the gods]” for is a mortal and will die someday, making out that his declaration will be replaced whereas the gods will be forever. However, her disrespect to Creon is established by her belief that “there is nothing shameful in honoring [her] brother” (559). Here, Antigone illustrates once again that the love and loyalty that she has for her brother Polyneices was her true and honest purpose for being defiant, not to show loyalty to the gods but to follow what the message employed: to cherish and respect family. For Antigone, “if [she] dared to leave the dead man, [her] mother’s son, dead and unburied, that would have been [the] real pain,” not death (510-512). Her desire to free the spirit of her brother so that it can be at peace explains the true reason of her rebellious…

Thus, to “dishonour/ The sacred laws that Heaven holds in honour” (77-78), punishment from the Gods would have been far more severe than that of Creon’s. Similar to the majority of Thebans here, she valued and prioritized religious and sacred laws above city and government laws. Deeply passionate, she believed that the laws of Gods were of higher status and therefore overruled the king himself. As we know, the Gods demand the burial of the dead, in which Creon refused the civic and religious duty. Nonetheless, by obeying the Gods, Antigone challenged Creon’s authority, but she feared not Creon nor death itself but rather death without honor.…

Two major themes that run throughout Sophocles’ play Antigone are loyalty and power. Loyalty and power are what drive the play forward; this theme affects not only Antigone, but Creon as well. Both Antigone and Creon are affected by this conflict, but in different ways. Antigone is first introduced to us as a young and loyal girl to bother her brother and the gods, that only wants to make sure both her brothers have a proper burial; according to the laws placed by the gods if someone does not receive a burial there will be no way for family members to reconnect with them in their life after death. Creon, who is the king and Antigone’s uncle, sets a law in place that no one is to bury or even mourn the death of Polynices.…
