Amir betrayed Hassan twice, first by witnessing and not stopping his rape out of shock, and then by coercing Ali and Hassan to leave. Hassan gets killed, and Amir has no real way to redeem himself until Sohrab's existence is brought into light. It is then revealed that Baba was Hassan's father as well, explaining the satisfaction of Baba when he got the surgery done for Hassan's harelip. This only strengthens the feeling of regret for Amir, because not only was Hassan his blood, but he often hated his father and envied his brother for his own lack of affection, not knowing his father had betrayed all of them and was trying to make up for it. When Amir and Sohrab beat up Assef, Hassan's rapist, it still isn't enough to forgive Amir's ignorance and actions. Amir even received a scar upon his lip similar to Hassan's after the surgery by Doctor Kumar.
