This is after Macbeth talks to Banquo about joining his supper and Banquo says he I joining them. When Macbeth says, “upon my head they placed a fruitless crown… Utterance” (III.i. 66-77) When Macbeth states, “To make them kings… Utterance” It shows that Macbeth is ambitious to become more than just king for a short time, he is not going to let Banquo 's prophecy come true as he is going to take matters into his own hands and kill Banquo and his son. When Macbeth says, “upon my head they placed a fruitless crown and put a barren scepter in my grip” It implies that Macbeth is distraught that he will not be able to have kings that are of his own dissent because of the witches saying Banquo 's son is going to be king. This quote is when Macduff is confronting Macbeth and Macduff explains that he is not born of a woman, then they fight. When Macduff says, “Despair thy charm, and… untimely ripped” (IV.8. 17-20) and when Macbeth says, “I will not yield… ‘Hold! Enough!’” (IV.8. 32-39) In the first quote when Macduff projects, “Tell thee Macduff was from his mother 's womb untimely ripped” this shows that Macduff was not born of a woman and since the prophecy states that he cannot be harmed by any man born of a woman, this shows that Macduff can hurt him. In the second quote when Macbeth says, “I will not yield… try my last” This shows that even though the prophecy says …show more content…

This theme could be “too much ambition is destructive.” Macbeth was overwhelmed with the temptation to kill Duncan to become the king and his ambition drove him to give in to this temptation. He believed that killing Duncan and becoming king would give him glory, praise, and wealth, when in reality, it gave him death. Although a healthy amount of ambition could lead to success, an excess amount of ambition mixed in with pride and temptation makes for a deadly recipe. By committing this crime, Macbeth shows that his ambition overpowers his thoughts, which is hamartia. He also proves that he is only concerned about the witches’ prophecies, which is hubris. If he did nothing about the prophecies, fate may have come true or he may not have been crowned because the witches might have known that he would kill Duncan to become king. Although, if the witches never told him of his fate, he most likely would not have killed Duncan due to the thought never coming to his…
