Theme Of Checkouts By Cynthia Rylant

My short story analysis is about "Checkouts" by Cynthia Rylant. The theme of this story conveys a sense of irony. The story is about a girl who was forced to move to Cincinnati with her family. Then while at the grocery store she sees a bagger boy for whom she immediately develops feelings. Things change though when they don't see each other for a period. The story begins when her parents moved her to Cincinnati, she wasn't exactly happy. "You'll love the house, they said. You'll be lonely at first, they admitted, but you're so nice you'll make friends fast." Those words were not exactly encouraging. The girl had obvious negative feelings about moving to a whole new city and into a new home. These points shape what the readers think about the girl, and possibly wonder what will happen next in her new life. The story doesn't portray any activities or hobbies this girl liked to participate in, but it does state "She liked to grocery shop." "Her parents wrote up the list and handed it to her, and off she went without complaint to …show more content…
Well not in this story it seems. "Incredibly, it was another four weeks before they saw each other again. As fate would have it, her visits to the supermarket never coincided with his schedule to bag." "And when they finally did meet up again, neither offered a clue to the other that he, or she, had been the object of obsessive thought for weeks." The girl ends up meeting another boy and develops feelings for him instead. The bag boy quits his job at the supermarket and starts work at a bookstore. "Some months later the bag boy and the girl with the orange bow again crossed paths, standing in line with their dates at a movie theater, and, glancing towards the other, each smiled slightly, then looked away." The fact that the girl and the boy end up in the same movie theatre with different dates is a perfect example of

A lot of people tend to take life and what it comes with for granted. The seven year old girl was searching for more than she can bear herself and didn’t even notice that, at her age, all she needed was somebody who nurtured her and cared for her. The author was also able to use a literary element that made me enticed into the text even more which was imagery. Throughout the passage, she went in depth of how she traveled in search of finding her “real” family. For example on page 83 (line 5) it states “ Sweat trickled down my spine as I stopped for a break on a fallen tree…” You can actually imagine the deprivation and tiredness she has from all that…

Loneliness is another unpleasant thing existing in this world that Kidd depicts in her novel, and throughout her work, she shows that this kind of awfulness can also be dealt with using positive actions. In the exposition, she makes it apparent that loneliness plays a huge role in the protagonist’s life. When Kidd depicts Lily’s life in the beginning, she informs her audience that Lily’s mother, Deborah, is dead, she has no friends besides her caretaker, Rosaleen, and she is in “misery [from] living with T.Ray (3),” her cruel father. Based on all of these facts, it is clear that Lily is a forlorn child and is feeling empty inside. However, as the story progresses, Kidd illustrates how the positive actions of the calendar sisters help Lily escape…

Things like generational discrimination and socioeconomics were able to be shown in this setting based on the things people were buying food for as well as the grim looks they were giving to the group of girls. The tone of the short story was very impersonal and told from a first person point of view. This helps to make the reader feel as if they are a friend of the narrator, which makes it easier for readers to identify with some things going on relating it to their life experience. The narrator does a good job of talking in a very descriptive manner to make the reader feel as if they are in the supermarket with him visualizing everything that he sees. Through the use of repetition in the tone the narrator expresses things that are important that allude to the theme.…

My choice of story for literary analysis is “What You Pawn I Will Redeem” by Sherman Alexie. It’s a story of culture, spirituality, and humor all woven together about a man who has lost a link to his past and the struggle he’ll have to face with his demons in order for him to reconnect with his history. There are two paths found in this story, the responsible adult side that shows maturity which ultimately are undone by the character’s struggle with depression, substance abuse which is the immature side that highlights the main character’s adventure to reclaim his grandmother’s dancing regalia. What most might consider poverty to be a disease that needs to be erased by any means necessary; but in Sherman Alexie’s “What You Pawn, I Will Redeem” the opposite is shown. The main character, Jackson has lived in the city of Seattle, Washington for the past twenty-three years.…

Throughout the story, the mother chooses to showcase different musical talents towards her daughter, in hope that her daughter masters one and becomes a “child prodigy.” Meanwhile, the daughter chooses to find herself through her own means rather than through the dreams of her mother, which sets the theme of how the expectations of a parent can lead to resentment from the child, especially when the child fails or struggles to reach the expectations of the parent.
