The Cons of Censorship

Censorship; the suppression or prohibition of any parts of books, films, news, etc. that are considered obscene, politically unacceptable, or a threat to security. Censorship is mainly used these days to protect kids from looking/hearing inappropriate things. Censorship is a major part of the society depicted in the novel “ Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury. Guy Montag the protagonist of the novel lives in a dystopian society where books are outlawed and if books are found they are burned along with the book owners home. Montag is a fireman who in that society is a person who burns books. Montag starts to read books from the houses he had burned and is in awe of what he learns. Montag realizes that government should

In the first part of the novel, Montag is in the firehouse and talks to Captain Beatty about their recent burning. Montag says, “About the fire last week, about the man whose library we fixed. What happened to him?” Beatty says, “They took him screaming off to the asylum” (Part 1, pg 31). This quote means that the man whose house was burned was taken to an asylum because the people thought he was crazy for having books. This is important because this quote shows how people are punished if they go against the government. Therefore this proves that living in a censored society is harmful to human beings because those who try to oppose the government are taken away and their house is set on fire. Similarly, towards the end of the novel, Montag has just burned his house and realizes that his wife turned on an alarm. Beatty tells Montag, “But her friends turned in an alarm earlier, that I let ride. One way or another, you’d have got it. It was the act of a silly damn snob” ( Part 3, pg 111). This quote means that Montag was first turned in by Mrs. Bowles and Mrs. Phelps and then Mildred, but he was going to get caught either way because of what he was saying. This also means that what people say in that society is limited. This evidence is important because it shows how people who go around and quote from books are told on by others which cause them to get in trouble. Hence this proves that censorship can be harmful to human beings because the people who go against the censorship get in trouble. Overall, censorship is harmful to human beings because if they go against the censorship they get in

One of the main points in this book is that Montag was not a thinking properly. Another reason was that he was illegally reading books. One reason that Montag was not thinking properly was because of his job. In his job they started fires by burning books instead of putting out the fires. “ And now since you're a fireman's wife, it's your house and your turn, for all the houses your husband burned and the people he hurt without thinking.”…

By going against his wife, boss, and society, Montag was faced with the choice of either being arrested or not living with the truth of books in his life. He decides to run away and finds a group of outcasts that have memorized certain books in order to keep history alive. From here the city is wiped out and Montag is able to live in a place of gracefulness while he rebuilds the city. “Perhaps later in the morning, when the sun was up and had warmed them they would begin to talk, or just say the things they remembered, to be sure they were there, to be absolutely certain that things were safe in them” (157). Montag was finally safe to speak his mind.…

Imagine a perfect society, where people that live in the world benefit from society, a utopia. The author of both Fahrenheit 451 and Harrison Bergeron explain what a world would be like if we had a perfect world, but also what would dramatically change if we did. Both societies in the books, Fahrenheit 451 and Harrison Bergeron, have shown that their world's censorship can be the most dangerous thing they can hide. Along with that, technology can have a big effect on how much power the government really has. To start off, in a society like in Fahrenheit 451, citizens would have information kept so they wouldn't rebel.…

Montag begins to understand the renewing and hopeful emotions that fire can provide, therefore giving symbolism to fire with himself. When he escapes to the river, the refreshing power of water stomps out the overwhelming fire of the thoughtless society from his past, and he is able to journey away from that and discover himself and actually listen to his own ideas and thoughts for once. In fact, upon escaping the city and finding the group of “book people,” Montag discovers a new type of fire he had never known, one that, “was not burning… it was warming” (Bradbury 145). The men gather around the fire in camaraderie and comfort, both of which never would have been recognized in his past society. He had never known the positive influences of fire, he only partook in the negative inflictions it caused, the one responsible for killing Mildred, Beatty and Faber.…

“Having lived through the transition of totalitarianism, I am acutely mindful of the need to never take for granted the basic freedoms of thought, expression and belief that democracy brings.” Throughout the novel, the influence of the government on the people came in an impactfully negative way. This made innocent people like Montag believe that being a fireman and burning books was a true service to society. He thought that he was saving his fellow citizens from something, although he couldn't quite grasp what he was saving them from. It wasn’t until he encountered the lady who died with her books, that changed his opinion and he began to rebel against the standardized way of living that he obeyed…

The third example of censorship in Montag 's society is the fast paced life censorship. The people wanted a fast paced life. Fahrenheit 451 Research Paper Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 materializes a world where censorship is so strong, it influenced the near- disintegration of domesticity, the banning of books and other pieces of literature, and the absence of memory of a time where books and historically accurate facts were not so “covered up.” Domesticity went into a strong decline after literature was illegalized. People began to lose their moral values. They took up violent forms of entertainment, such as running over animals and even fellow humans, indiscriminately, with their jet cars. Mildred and her friends watched bloody cartoons of white clowns killing one another.…

Even when trapped and imprisoned, be this figuratively or literally, human beings have a tendency to assert their freedom. In a dystopian society, where freedom of decision is stifled, this rings especially true. Fahrenheit 451, written by Ray Bradbury, sticks true to this fact of human nature. Guy Montag, a firefighter, is the main example of this fact. Starting on the track to his rebellion, Montag begins to steal books from the homes he burns, reading them illegally in his own home.…

Fahrenheit 451 is a dystopian novel written by Ray Bradbury in 1953. The book describes what Ray Bradbury anticipates the world would be like in the future. He depicted a society in which values like appreciation of nature, independent thinking and meaningful conversations are not practiced but discouraged and replaced with excessive amounts of television viewing and listening to the radio. He envisioned a society where firmen do not put out fires but start them, particularly when it comes to the burning of books. Censorship is the altering or suppression of speech, public communication and other information that may be considered harmful determined by the government.…
