Theme Of Blind Loyalty In Romeo And Juliet

Superior Essays
Being loyal to anything - be it an idea or a person - can often come with many repercussions. However, following someone or something impetuously can result in even more. A lot of the time, people stay devoted to their friends or family, or a belief of some kind. That kind of loyalty can be extremely powerful, but the same loyalty can become harmful when it is uncontrolled. Blind loyalty can lead to unwanted conflicts, force ones’ friends to become distant enemies, and make good ideas end disastrously.
Regrettable conflicts are an unfortunate result of blind loyalty. In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the Capulets and the Montagues are so faithful to their families, that a brawl breaks out whenever any member of the families are together.

In Romeo and Juliet, Friar Lawrence has an idea that, if executed right, could allow Romeo and Juliet to be together happily. He says to Juliet, “Hold, daughter, I do spy a kind of hope, which craves as desperate an execution as that is desperate which we would prevent...and if thou dar’st, I’ll give thee remedy” (4.1.68-70, 76). Juliet is so loyal to Romeo (whom she has only known for 3 days at this point) that she is willing to pretend to be poisoned. After she is buried, Romeo is supposed to enter the vault where she is laid, and awake her fro mher slumber, and the two are to run away together. However, Romeo doesn’t get the message, and when he hears of Juliet’s death, he travels to the vault to see her. Upon seeing his dead love, he drinks poison so he can die and be reunited with her, “Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die” (5.3.120). Shortly after, Juliet is awakened, and is so overwhelmed by Romeo’s death that she stabs herself, “O happy dagger, this is thy sheath; there rust, and let me die” (5.3.170). Friar Lawrence’s idea ended catastrophically - bringing pain to not only Romeo and Juliet, but to their friends and families as well. A corresponding event occurs in Moxie, when the girls protested by tagging any sexist persons’ property with stickers that read “You’re An Asshole - XOXO Moxie.” Although they were only trying to peacefully rally, the stickers ended up costing a lot of money to remove from lockers, folders, and cars. The devotion these girls felt to Moxie led to the good idea of stickers, but resulted in the school’s budget shrinking to accommodate the removal of
