One-Sided Relationship Being betrayed by someone who you love is the most painful feeling. In the novel, The Count of Monte Cristo, betrayal is a common theme. Many characters could be considered Edmond’s ultimate betrayer. However, Mercedes proves to be his ultimate betrayer by being unloyal and selfish. Mercedes betrays Edmond by marrying Fernand. For example, in the beginning of the novel, Mercedes says, “He’ll be your friend Edmond because he’s my friend. He’s my cousin Fernand, the man I love most in the world after you” (Dumas 13). In this quote, Mercedes says that she loves Edmond more than Fernand. By saying this, she contradicts herself because she ends up marrying the man she loves second. She betrays Edmond because she lies to him about loving Fernand second. The narrator …show more content…
This quality causes her to betray Edmond. After Edmond went to prison, Mercedes became depressed. As mentioned in the novel, “Mercedes is now one of the greatest ladies of Paris; said Caderousse” (Dumas 108). Although she was depressed, it was selfish of her to go out and become educated and rich while her fiance was in prison. She only wants to make herself feel better. In the novel, Caderousse explains that Mercedes is extremely educated. “As her fortune grew, she grew with it. She learned drawing, she learned music, she learned everything” (Dumas 109). Mercedes does all of these things only to distract herself from reality. She was so selfish that she was not able to deal with reality; she was only able to think of how she can distract herself. This causes her to betray Edmond by only thinking of her pain and bettering herself rather than focusing on how her fiance is suffering in prison.
Mercedes’ actions proved her to be Edmond’s ultimate betrayer. Her self-centered qualities ultimately led her to betray Edmond. Betraying someone who loves you is the worst thing you could do. For these reasons, Mercedes is Edmond’s ultimate

Throughout my lifetime, there has been moments of laughter as well as grief. But a moment in my life that was pivotal was when I first felt the love of my life, at the moment, fade away slowly from me and sort of detach from our relationship. The song by Christian Nodal- “Adios Amor” showed me how at times when the love fades between partners to the point where there is no love at all, you have to do your best to move on rather than spending time grieving the love that is lost. Therefore, the song “Adios Amor” gave me the tough realization that some relationships are best to let go of if they don’t work as a young adult, and will continue to guide me throughout my life.…

Madame de Lafayette examines the theme of jealousy stemming from self-love in her novel, The Princess of Cleves. This idea of self-interested jealousy was studied by multiple intellects of the time, including Thomas Hobbes and Francois de La Rochefoucauld. These men greatly contributed their ideas to the incredibly introspective age of the 1600s, illustrating the idea that the actions a person takes in everyday life are fundamentally ingrained in their own self-interest. Despite being self-motivated, these jealous actions are counterproductive and result in the inability for a person to be satisfied and happy. Madame de Lafayette proves in her revolutionary psychological novel, The Princess of Cleves, that jealousy is a dangerous and destructive…
