Theme Of Believing

Believe The sound of feet pattering down the stairs fills a warm house. It is seven o’clock in the morning, but not just any morning...Christmas Day. The children rush to the living room to find that under their Christmas tree sits a collection of presents with matching paper. Santa has come. The parents joyfully observe as their children happily tear open their gifts from Santa, reflecting on how they had placed them in just the right spots under the tree the previous night. Unaware of this fact, the kids chatter about how amazing it is that Santa always knows what they want. The children believe in Santa; likewise, they believe their parents when they say that the presents are from a man who drives a sleigh with eight flying reindeer. This …show more content…
Toddlers will believe almost anything, and as they grow, they use what others tell them to form opinions and to learn the difference between what is right and wrong. Parents or guardians demonstrate what they want their kids to believe, in most cases. It could be something as small as believing in the Tooth Fairy to as major as believing in a certain religion or lack thereof. The theme of believing can be found in many children's books, which are popular tools used for instilling belief systems of a culture. As boys and girls grow up and have established a foundation of right and wrong, they then have to learn one of the most important skills in life: to believe in themselves. In the book The Little Engine That Could, the little blue engine wasn’t the strongest or the biggest to pull the load of toys up the mountain. Because she believed in herself, she made it all the way over the mountain, chanting to herself, “I think I can. I think I can. I think I can,” (Piper, Watty). Often this political disagreement is due to religious beliefs. Each person believes his or her religion is what is true and accurate. The issue with this is that if everyone believes their ideals are true, then how does anyone agree? The answer is that they do not. In the United States, citizens are free to believe in whichever religion they choose; however, in other countries, the government allows citizens to believe in only one specific religion. For example, in many middle eastern countries, governments typically have a strong Muslim influence. In the country of Syria, specifically, there is political and religious unrest happening currently due to the government requiring all citizens to practice Islam. The problems in Syria have rapidly become more widespread. According to BBC News, Citizens who try to implement democracy in Syria have been been punished, even killed, for believing something other than what the government says. Many Syrian people no longer believe in their government, which is what has caused the civil war in their country (“Syria: The story of the Conflict”). Syria is not the only country that has citizens losing belief and trust in their government due to

What if I told you that American politics polar opposites date all the way back to the beginning of our countries creation in the 1700's; from todays Donald Trump vs. Bernie Sanders to the 1790's Thomas Jefferson vs. Alexander Hamilton. In the 1790's George Washington was president. Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton were members of Washington's cabinet. During that time these men had many opposing views and very few similarities. One of the reasons why people then and now, especially Hamilton and Jefferson, disagree is because of their views/political affiliation.…

The allegory of the cave is meant to be a visual aid for Plato, through Socrates, to show how philosophers come to be from a common crowd, how they come to understand the forms, and how they should teach those who do not understand the forms and be the ones who rule over the city. A second way to view the allegory is as a description of how education begins even today. Plato starts off by comparing ignorance to living in a cave with limited knowledge, which makes sense when one thinks about how closed-minded a people of any population can be. A person like this does not give any thought to things outside of his or her own knowledge and never expands on what he or she may know, just like the prisoners in the cave and how they accepted what they were seeing as the truth. This lifestyle is represented by the chains holding prisoners against the wall, only able to see shadows of…

From the establishment of the United States in 1776 to the African-American Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s, the citizens of this republic nation have been separated in their ideas. After eighty-seven years of its existence, the United States finally liberated its slaves, and it took the imperial republic one hundred and seventy eight years to legally end segregation through the eradication of the Jim Crow Laws. Throughout the history of the United States, the citizens of the nation were divided mostly because of race; however, the citizens are currently divided because of their wealth. Although the United States is mostly divided because of wealth, race is still a prominent factor.…

In, Lies my Teacher Told Me, by James Loewen, many different important points are made about how the history textbook industry is corrupt, telling lies, or not telling the whole truth to the young readers. This should be very evident to most people, since textbooks spanning from elementary to high school often tell different pieces of information, and sometimes, complete opposite of those pieces of information. For years, history textbooks have been corrupted by the economically elite, and “teach” children information that will enable them to turn into perfect, radical patriotic, citizens. The main goal of textbooks is to make America out to look like the perfect nation who has never done anything wrong, and is better than all the other countries.…

“Your character will be what you yourself choose to make it” is a quote by British naturalist and politician, John Lubbock. I strongly agree with his quote for several reasons. I believe Lubbock’s meaning behind his quote is that no person can allow society to determine the mental characteristics he or she contains. In all seven billion people in the world, not a single one of them carries the same characteristics as any other person. If society is in control of how we act then it is impossible for us to be the way we are meant to be.…

Every nation and country has a way of running itself; a way to govern what is considered lawful and unlawful. In the United States of American, there is a massive controversial debate about whether our democracy is majoritarian or if it is more pluralistic in nature. Some may argue that the mass public, or every citizen in the country, is able to control the government’s actions. Others will state that many groups are able to work together amongst themselves to be able to allow more involvement of the citizens in a majority of the nation’s decisions. Both of these ideas of how our government works are similar in ways as well as different in many other ways.…

In the book “Watchmen” by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, it forces the readers to focus on an aspect that they’d rather not think about: the hopelessness of it all. That, no matter what we do or what we say, it will not actually stop major disasters from happening. That, no matter how much love and hope strives to live in this world, it doesn’t always stay that way. For the book as a whole, one of the major themes that sticks out is how everything is hopeless and that there really is no use in resisting what’s going on the world, especially if you are only one person against the whole world.…
