An important theme in this book is “Things will not be as bad as you think they will be.” I think this theme fits the book “Al Capone Does My Shirts” because it falls under the category of change. Moose Flanagan and his family moved from Santa Monica, California to Alcatraz, an island filled with criminals. That is a big change for a 12 year old. Moose felt upset when he moved. He had left all of his friends in Santa Monica. An issue in this book is when Natalie gets kicked out of her school for screaming.
