The theme of The Outsiders is plain and obvious to see. The Outsiders is a novel written by S.E. Hinton. Chances are, you’ve read it in school. The theme of this book is easy to get out. Being outsiders, seeing the viewpoint of an outsider, this case a greaser. As an outsider, you may see life as terrible and ugly. Few examples of this is when Ponyboy is walking home from the movie theaters, his education and hobbies, and the fact Johnny and Ponyboy didn’t go immediately to the police.
Firstly, the example of Ponyboy and greasers being outsiders, is when after Ponyboy gets done watching a movie and walking home, he knows something, “Greasers can’t walk alone too much or they’ll get jumped, or someone will come by and scream “Greaser!” at them, which doesn’t make you feel too hot, if you know what I mean.” (Hinton 2) He feels almost isolated from the town, or like a corned animal. They run. They run away with help from Dally. Was it only till after the ran for so long, they had to convince themselves they would be okay if they turned themselves in. To elaborate, greasers are the outsiders. They would be seen as more violent and easy to blame. Even tho it was self dense, Johnny and Ponyboy were still greasers. “I got a good chance of bein’ let off easy,” Johnny said desperately…. “I ain’t gone no record with the fuzz and it was self-defense. Ponyboy and Cherry can testify to that…” (Hinton 87) Johnny is saying, he has no history of violence. This would be his first time ever being evolved with the police. Also note he said Ponyboy and Cherry. Ponyboy being a witness wouldn’t cut it, for it only being one person and that one person being a greaser. He has to have Cherry’s too, mainly because she is a Soc. And police would question the Socs
