The story begins with sarty following the legal way or his father way and his father's way isn't always the wisest choice. One time at court when he was given the chance to tell the truth he chose not to because he was in fear his father might hit him again. He made sacrifices so that he could protect his family name but never his own. Sarty never really lived for himself he always went by his father wishes but then wishes soon grew him hate his dad.
He thought the de Spain mansion was going to help his father change because it was “comparable to the place of law” as smart says but it didn't help him change. unfortunately sarty started to believe he will have to side with justice. His father has the potential to change but don't want to he's just avoiding the fact because he's so deep in with the barn burning . He is always finding trouble as sarty continue to look for the good in him. His dad actions finally caught up to him when de Spain shot him for trying to burn down his barn and sarty doesn't know whether or not he is dead or alive.
This story will tell you that if you keep living for other people you wouldn't know what to do when it's yours turn to live your life . Sarty was so loyal to his family mainly his dad he didn't even know the idea of self loyalty. He always followed in his father's footsteps which led him in bad situations.
