Gruwell talked about how the teachers tried to break her down and wanted her to give up on the students like all the other teachers did, all the teachers gave up on the students and she couldn't because she felt like she was the only hope they had to make it through high school and life. Ms. Gruwell bought books for the students because she felt that the books could relate to their life and would make them want to read because it was relating to their lives and they could also get an education in the same process. Later on in the school year Ms. Gruwell asked the students to write a self-evaluation and asked the students to put a letter grade and one of the students put an “F” and Ms.Gruwell didn’t believe in failure from the student and she confronted the student and made sure the student would never think like that
