Everyone has experienced someone else judging him or her to a certain degree, and the diverse groups of students that I am working with at my field placement are certainly no exception. Luckily, the school culture promotes individuality and being who you want to be, but unfortunately being different isn’t promoted everywhere. Discriminating based off of how someone looks is more common than not, and my students are beginning to realize this as they begin to form their own opinions about current issues in society. This Thematic Unit has carefully and thoughtfully integrated students’ lives, and placed their lived experiences at the heart of this unit.
