This essay will look at the scene “Drive Louise Drive” from the feature film “Thelma and Louise”. This film follows two friends as they decide to break free from their everyday lives. They take off, during this weekend Louise kills Harlan for attempting to rape Thelma. Their weekend away turns into a cross county chase from authority that being the police and the men in their lives. The significance this scene holds in relation to the film is that the viewer, can see the protagonists move closer to their freedom. Freedom from their daily lives and their relationships. This is communicated to the audience through the use of motifs, the use of these motifs adds to the theme of the film, this will be elaborated on later in the text. There are many details throughout this scene that demonstrate how Thelma has evolved. The scene opens with a wide shot of both Thelma and Louise in the car. Thelma is in the driver’s seat and she is smoking. These two details contribute to her character development because in a prior scene in act one, we met Thelma a timid, childish women eating chocolate, later on she was shown mimicking Louise smoking, with her feet on the dash board, reinforcing the immature sheltered women the audience had been introduced to. Although in this scene the audience sees a direct contrast to this earlier women. Thelma has now grown more independent from the man in her life, her husband Daryl. The car is Thelma and Louise’s shared space, it is what gives them the ability to move away from their mundane routines and patriarchal relationships. Now Thelma is driving, showing more control. Another detail the underlines Thelma’s evolution is the change in her clothing earlier depicting her in dresses and the like, now she is wearing practical clothing more suited to the task at
