Throughout history, religions have popped up all around the world; some religions are thousands of years old while others have recently came into existence. Thelema is a relatively new religion in the world compared to many of the older religions like Hinduism, Buddhism, and et cetera. Its background and history is incredibly interesting, but its current existence is less than what its founder had wanted it to be. With rules that have been adapted to philosophy and religion, Thelema has been passed up by philosophers, scholars, and the general public who merely write Thelema off as some type of Satanic, witchcraft type of religion for people who are crazy. The describe themselves as so, “The O.T.O. is a Thelemic Order which is dedicated to the high purpose of securing the Liberty of the Individual and his or her advancement in Light, Wisdom, Understanding, Knowledge, and Power through Beauty, Courage, and Wit, on the Foundation of Universal Brotherhood” (O.T.O). From what it known about Thelema, the O.T.O seems to take the teachings of Aleister very seriously, especially the rules discussed earlier from The Book of Law. It apparently has its structure is very similar to that of the Freemasons, possibly meaning that it was a Masonic group at some point in history.
