The quest for love and happiness often seems outside our grasp. In the novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God”, Janie is married three times looking for love in each of Janie’s marriages she is abused in a different way. Finally in Janie's last marriage with Tea Cake she finds herself and love. Janie starts looking for love at a young age and seeks it throughout the novel. “Their Eyes Were Watching God” is the story of Janie who searches for true love through her relationships but in the end finds happiness with herself and her true identity. After Joe dies Janie has a nice funeral for Joe. Janie is supppose to wear dark clothing since she is a widow, but she doesnt. Janie does not mourn over Joes death. She tells Phoeby that mourning should not last longer than the grief. One night Janie is working in the store and Tea Cake walks in to buy some cigarettes. Janie and Tea Cake immediately hit it off. They play checkers together all night. Janie and Tea Cake become public with their relationship. Janie goes to Jacksonville to marry Tea Cake. When she wakes up Tea Cake is gone and so is her $200 that she pinned inside of her jacket. Tea Cake abuses Janies trust. When he returns he apologizes to Janie and tells her he will earn it back. Joe earns Jnioes money back by gambling. But when he comes back he has been stabbed. He talks to Janie telling her that he is going to provide for both of them and that he wants to move to the Everglades. “Ah no need no assistance tuh help me feed mah woman. From now on, you gointuh eat whatever mah money can buy yuh wher de same. When Ah aint got nothin’ you don’t git nothin.” Tea Cake is telling Janie that he is going to be the provider for the both of them and that they arent going to use Janies money.
