The head rags were mentioned in the book a few times. The rags not only symbolize possession but, probably symbolize slavery. “… he ordered Janie to tie up her hair around the store. She was there in the store for him to look at, not those other.”(55). Hurston does a good job in putting this quote because it shows how, Jody saw Janie as an object that only he could have and no one else. By making Janie wear the head rags to cover her beautiful hair, it made it clear that Janie was obedient, and followed orders from Jody, like a slave would follow orders from their master. In Their Eyes Were Watching God the author shows the readers a description of how Janie is glad to be free from the possession of Jody when he passes away. “She tore off the kerchief from her head and let down her plentiful hair. The length, the glory was there.”(87). When reading this passage from the novel the word that stands out is glory when seeing it makes it seem as Janie a now free and can has authorization to do and be whomever she
