Janie's first kiss marked the beginning of her love story. Johnny, Janie's neighbor, gave her a kiss one day while she was relaxing beneath her beloved pear tree. This was something Nanny saw early on, and she decided it was time to find Janie a stable, decent husband. She wed three men in her lifetime: Joe Starks, Logan Killicks, and Tea Cake. The way these men treated Janie and showed her affection was entirely different. When you read and learn about them, it becomes apparent that one stands out from the other two. Janie's first husband was Logan Killicks. She married him only to please Nanny; she had no feelings of love for him at all. Still, Janie was hopeful about her marriage. Although Janie thinks she can't fit in and that people are avoiding her, the town is envious of her. People quickly become aware of Joe's verbal abuse and her acceptance of criticism for her actions. When Joe publicly shames her yet again, Janie could no longer put up with him after nearly 20 years of having to endure it. “When you pull down yo’ britches, you look lak de change uh life.” (Hurston 96) Janie humiliated Joe in the store and Joe's reputation in the town was diminished. He lashes out and hits Janie and has her leave the store. After this moment, there were almost no words said between them, except when Joe lay on his deathbed. Janie starts with an apology while Joe still blames her for how their marriage ended up. As Joe draws his next breath, she assures him that she did not abandon Logan to live a life of servitude. Her last marriage was to Tea Cake, a younger guy for whom she initially received criticism, but she saw it as an opportunity to return to her youth
