Through the use of a callous yet optimistic tone, simile, descriptive imagery, and a stream of consciousness style, the speaker reveals her deep emotional feelings of repression, her place in society, and ultimately, her realization of a free will. First, Hurston has the speaker reflect on Joe's death and how she is confused on how to react to the death in front of other people. The author shows the struggle the speaker faces over how she is obliged to feel and how she truly feels about the death her tone here suggests that she is indifferent to the death and that she is hopeful about the future. In this section of the passage, Hurston demonstrates the boiled up hate Janie had for her grandmother through anger and instability in a critical situation.Hurston, use of personification is critical in describing Janie's initial loneliness. She describes the big house as “creaking and crying all night under the weight of lonesomeness” Janie describes her emotions through the house by doing so she doesn't have to confront the loneliness herself. Also the author again uses personification in order to show the instability of Janie's emotions when Janie “ Lies awake asking lonesomeness some questions” Janie is not used to being alone her whole life she had somebody who would dictate her and she would follow the orders but now she has no one, no one to tell her to tie up her hair and no one who would force her to obey orders she is finally free and she doesn't know how to comprehend her emotion.
