Their Eyes Were Watching God Three good qualities every guy should have are, loving, providing, and selfless. In the novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston, the main character Janie is on her life journey trying to find love. It is set in Florida in 1937. These times are different than nowadays, so that means what is expected from men is also different. Janie wants a man who is loving, providing, and selfless. She meets and marries three men, but only one of them has those three qualities. These three men are Logan, Joe, and Tea Cake. Tea Cake is a good fit for Janie because he meets her expectations for husband material, unlike Logan and Joe lacking all of those qualities.

Janie wants a man who is loving, providing, and selfless. Even though Joe is able to provide he lacks in being loving and selfless. One day Joe and a multitude of men were sitting outside making fun of someone’s poor, old mule and Janie was outside as well thinking of jokes about the mule along with the men and Joe tells her, “You’se Mrs. Mayor Starks, Janie. I god, Ah can’t see what uh woman uh yo’ stability would want tuh be treasurin’ all dat gum-grease from folks dat don’t even own de house dey sleep in” (54). Joe was getting jealous of Janie being outside with him and the men so he tells her he does not want her talking to trashy people. Joe buys the mule from the owner and eventually it dies so the town has a fake funeral for it to mock it and Janie wants to go with Joe but he tells her, “Why Janie! You wouldn’t be seen at uh draggin’-out, wouldja? Wid any and everybody in uh passle pushin’ and shovin’ wid they no-manners selves? Naw, naw” (60). Joe does not want his wife going out with everyone because he is jealous that other guys will look at Janie. He is not confidant in his wife. Eventually Joe dies and Janie meets a new man and his name is Tea
