Ages of Love
Being in love is tough, but after craving affection for so long, our main character finally found what she was looking for. Throughout Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston, we, the readers, follow Janie, the main character’s life over a number of years. In the beginning, Janie lies under a pear tree dreaming about what love is like, but by the end of the book, she achieves the love desired. It defiantly took longer than she expected, but her dreams finally came true with her last husband, Tea Cake. Some other main character included Nanny, Logan Killicks, Joe Starks, Tea Cake and Phoebe Watson. Throughout the story, Janie’s development as a woman gets stronger.

Vergible Woods, also known as Tea Cake, was the name of Janie’s third and last husband. Overlooking of the eleven-year age difference, the couple met at the store Joe owned when he was alive. Tea Cake came into the store and taught Janie how to play checkers. To show Janie that he was serious about their relationship he invited her to a Sunday school picnic so everyone could see them together. Janie decided to marry Tea Cake, so she left Eatonville and the store behind. They moved to the Everglades and lived on the …show more content…
Turner, a neighbor lady, tried convincing Janie that she could do better than him. After Tea Cake heard of Mrs. Turners doings, he began to beat Janie, claiming, “Ah beat her tuh show dem Turners who is boss.” (Hurston) A hurricane was on its way so Janie and Tea Cake were on their way to palm beach. The hurricane was so bad that they had to swim partly there. To keep from drowning, Janie held onto a cow’s tail, the only problems was there was an angry dog on the cows back. Tea Cake attempted to kill the dog before it attacked his wife; getting bit in the process. When the couple returned to the Everglades, Tea Cake began to feel ill. After calling a doctor, the couple was told Tea Cake had rabies and that there is no cure. Refusing a hospital stay, Tea Cake began getting worse, and even attempted to kill his wife. Janie fought back and shot him to get rid of the monster
