Their Eyes Were Watching God Book Report

Their Eyes Were Watching God was written by Zora Neale Hurston. She is the sixth of eight children and experienced much slavery in her life. Four of her grandparents were born into slavery. Zora is known for her African-American literature as well as the plays, shorts stories, and essays she has written. Her short stories touch apon African American struggles that they faced and how to overcome it all. Zora intended for the narrator to sound classical, lyrical, and philosophical. Their Eyes Were Watching God is a realistic fiction book about an African-American women trying to find love. The themes of the story would include death, romance, relationships, power, conquest, and fulfillment. The story takes place in Eatonville, Florida, and in the Everglades. The book starts out with the main character, Janie Crawford explaining what happened to her late husband Tea Cake. She also starts explaining her other husband, Jody and what happened to him also. Janie is very determined to find unconditional love and strive to do her best. She wants to achieve so much and gain respect from all of her friends. Janie says, “ Tea Cake, you’re sick. You’re takin’ everything in de way ah, don’t mean it. Ah couldn’t never be tired uh waitin’ on you. Ah’m just skeered you’se too sick fuh me tuh handle. Ah wants yuh tuh git well, honey. Dat’s all” (182). This shows that Janie wants to help Tea Cake but, he would not take it and their is what starts the argument between them. Tea Cake was bitten by a rabid dog and this is how he became sick. He started to hallucinate to think that Janie was cheating on him with someone else. Tea Cake than takes a pistol to Janie and starts to fire. Janie had to defend herself, she killed Tea Cake and was later sent to court but, was found not guilty. This would be the climax of the story
