Their Eyes Were Watching God: An Analysis

Men can come in all shapes and forms. They can turn your life around in a positive way or a negative way. Zora Neale Hurston’s “Their Eyes Were Watching God” is a story about a women name Janie Crawford who is on a mission to find love. She has three different marriages in her lifetime and felt differently about each one. In “Their Eyes Were Watching God” Janie’s Three husbands have differences concerning Janie’s treatment, physical appearance, and true love
One of the first differences Logan Killicks, Joe Starks, and Tea Cake don’t have in common is Janie’s Treatment. For example, in “Their Eyes Were Watching God” Logan makes Janie work. For example, she didn’t really love logan. She was forced into that relationship by her nanny. Hurston explains “Finally out of Nanny’s talk and her own conjectures she made a sort of comfort for herself. Yes, she would love Logan after they were married.”(Hurston 21). This quote explains that she had no choice but to love Logan after they was married. Joe is different because she wasn’t forced into the relationship with him, but she still didn’t love him either. The author points out “Then she starched and ironed her face, forming it into just what people wanted to see, and opened up the window and cried, ‘Come heah people! Jody is dead. Mah husband is gone from me.’ (Hurston 87). This is explaining that she fixed her face to what the people wanted to see, but that isn’t how she felt. Tea cake is also different because she actually loved him. Hurston responds “The day of the gun, and the bloody body, and the court- house came and commenced to sing a sobbing sigh out of every corner in the room... The kiss of his memory made pictures of love and light against the wall. Here was peace”(Hurston 192). This is saying that she was sad that she shot Tea Cake, but he forgives
