Theatre Of Cruelty Analysis

Theatre of Cruelty was developed by Antonin Artaud to show to audiences that the theatre wasn't necessarily an escape from the world but actually realisation of their worst nightmares and deepest fears. I believe both groups did this extremely well even though one was more subtle than the other. Each group used various techniques to enhance and manipulate the atmosphere of the performance.

In the first piece we watched, the audience was blindfolded and lead into a room. There use of space and proxemics was utilised brilliantly because of the way we were lead from one room to another while holding onto each other in a line. The blindfolds made you lose sense of all direction and having to hold onto others made you feel as if they were your

The juxtaposition of spaces worked extremely well because one minute everyone was in a large space and the next we were shoved under, what we later found out was the stage and shut into a tight space where you couldn't move a muscle because of the other bodies surrounding you.

The use of character and roles also worked immensely well. All through the performance either one or more people were shouting at you, making you feel uncomfortable but also producing a realistic experience. The sound effects really helped in bring the whole performance to life. It not only set the mood and atmosphere but also created a perfect amount of tension. To me the sound of the waves crashing against the ‘boat’ actually signified hope because I felt as if we were getting away from the shouting and going to a better place but towards the end I felt like the sound of the waves contradicted themselves because when we were sent away from ‘Australia’ all you could hear was the waves crashing lightly

At first it started of just like an ordinary realism piece and that in itself was creepy because I was expecting something where someone was shouting at me or trying to scare everyone and make us feel uncomfortable. They used tension extremely well throughout the performance by making the audience believe they were accidentally making mistakes and they placed the ‘mistakes’ so well that it didn't look obvious or over done. Everyone also kept to their character and role extremely well. Their projections was always appropriate and pauses were significant to the performance, once again creating tension. The mood and atmosphere changed throughout the piece due to the comedic mistakes that were made to the tense and serious fighting of the couple and the slap only enhanced that mood. This performance hit its peak when Michaelie barged through the door asking the teacher if they could start the performance again. That moment was when my heart stopped and I felt most fearfully, not for myself but for the group because I knew they were going to lose marks owing to the disruption. Tension, mood and atmosphere really made this performance shine because of the way group handled the assignment and were able to think of such a unique and different idea to display the techniques they

Another important idea from the novel Holes by Louis Sachar is the negative effects of cruelty. This is shown in many way about how cruelty exits in large amounts at Camp Green Lake, and its negative results are frequently shown throughout the novel. In the beginning and at the end they played some old Italian type music as the dancers moved as one person and this gave the impression of a sort of warm family vibe throughout this section. There was also an instance of an extremely loud and almost uncomfortable sound during a portion in the middle which allowed the mood of the audience to switch to disturbed or uneasy, which was simultaneously reflected in their dancing and movements on and off the main “dancing portion” of the stage. A powerful instance which occurred a couple times was when the music shut off completely and there was only the audiences breathing, and the heavy panting of the dancers that could be heard throughout the theatre. This clearly intentional choice not only made the concept intriguing, but it allowed the audience to a feel a level of connect and grounding with the dancers as well. Much of the music reflected the different colour changes on screen as it was more serene during the cloud projection, but it was fast and very loud when the screen went to red.…

All I can say is, the story had somewhat of a quicker pace and sometimes harder to follow and small details could easily be missed, and the lighting was a tiny bit distracting when it flashed across the stage quickly. The use of sound effects was used to signify different things that caught the attention of the viewers and really added a special touch to the play. The play showcased beautiful and stunning singing which made the play more authentic, combined with the elaborate dances numbers truly made the show breathtaking and…

As the curtains went up, the audience was present with a metal structure that was the bottom of the Eiffel tower. This beautiful metal structure made me only excited to see what the rest of the sets would look like. The lighting right off the bat was extremely elegant, being that the majority of the lights had a shade of purple. This set the feel of the Parisian world that the audience would be taken on. Before I saw the show, I imagined the stage being much bigger than it actually was in reality.…

The dancers demonstrated some positions that are not normally seen at the gym and it truly creative. For example, they demonstrated running by stumbling their feet as fast as they could. Additionally, the dance contained funny movements such as a dancer dragging another dancer across the stage. The most entertaining part of the performance was when two male dancers came out to the stage to lecture the female dancers on how their workout should have been done.…

In 2008, a video was released by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) that showed severe animal cruelty at Mowmar Farms Hog Confinement, located just outside of Fairmont, Minnesota (Genoways). The video showed employees prodding hogs too crippled to stand with electric prods and beating hogs repeatedly on their backs with metal gate rods (Genoways). Adding to this, the video also revealed the method the workers used to euthanize underweight piglets: a technique called thumping (Genoways). Thumping involves workers taking the piglets by their hind legs and smashing their skulls against the concrete floor. Their bodies would then be put in large bins, where they would be left to die (Genoways).…

As the actors spun the set design I became filled with anticipation for what was about to occur, but as the musical progressed my excitement toward the play dwindled. It was almost as if the initial spinning of the stage disoriented me and I was dizzy and confused for the rest of the night. Without the girls beside me explaining the play to each other during intermission I never would have known what was going on. The actors all performed wonderfully, but there were too many actors with unspoken problems to follow.…

To add, there was a blank sheet backdrop that was very cleverly used throughout the play. In a scene where there was plane chasing the main character on the opposing side of the sheet a light was shown with a model airplane to give the crowd the idea that a plane was flying. Also, in another scene there was a party and some of the actors were behind the sheet dancing with manicans to give the audience the perception that many people were there. If there were more complex scenes such as a scene on a train the characters used their bodies and motion to signify what was happening and the audience was forced to use their imagination. Many times this was done in a comedic way that also added to the value of the production.…

I found the use of dramatic lighting to play the largest role in the ghost scenes where inflicting fear was intended. In singular, flashing fluorescent colors of white and green gave great detail. The sound designer used simulated reality to portray realistic sounds in the play as man-made, and not technological. This made the play feel legitimate, and less like a performance, as if I was observing it in the real world. The set, however, was the most enticing of all the visual effects.…

My mood was jubilant that day because I was glad I came to that performance instead of staying home. I would have felt home sick with all that final review so it was pleasant and peaceful having entertainment for such a low cost but great performance. The movements I identified were a lot of the terms I went over in dance class from degage to grand battement, the list goes all over. The name of the performance should be called “The Art of Adventure” and it should be divided into subgenres which focuses on the main theme adventure. Adventure can be dim or bright but they always seem to have a long lasting well produced ending.…

The movement starts with a very mysterious tone with the instruments playing ascending and descending conjunct scales very quickly. Additionally, the instruments gradually layer on top of one another and then return to a single instrument over and over again to audibly depict the rising and falling of the waves. This layering and very strong sound can correlate to the sharp dark blue color of the waves in the woodblock print As the piece continues, the mood changes back and forth between mysterious, pleasant, and franticly distressed, which are different emotions that one can experience while at sea. These shifts in mood are sudden and random, just as the weather at sea often rapidly changes and causes those on ships, perhaps the ships in the woodblock artwork, to quickly change their attitudes towards being at sea. Around two minutes and ten seconds, higher pitched instrument take over and evoke a very airy feel that can be related to the wind swirling around.…
