Theatre Admission Essay

There is a moment, before the large expanse of the red curtain is drawn back and the radiant glare of the lights will flood the stage, when I wonder if I can go through it. My stomach feel as if it’s a dryer in a high spin cycle and the adrenaline running through my veins makes me feel the most confident and most insecure I’ve ever felt. There is something so intimate about live theatre that it’s simultaneously terrifying and thrilling. Then the music begins, I close my eyes, and I take a deep breath. I open my eyes and the nerves are gone because I am no longer me but a character entering a world that is authentically their own. The curtains glide open and it begins, this is theatre.
I was always an outgoing kid. I loved making people laugh and the attention that came with it. For some reason, it never occurred to my parents to put me in theatre and I wanted to be a cheerleader, so I never considered it. Then in the

Since being here I’ve been able to take production, acting, directing, film, musical theatre and technical theatre classes, all of which helped me grow and develop my understanding of all the sectors and aspects of theatre. The close knit students of the theatre strand are nothing short of family to me, and it’s amazing to go to a school of like-minded individuals. I was able to experience being in a multitude of plays and musicals and get an in-depth study of the many acting techniques. I appreciate the education I’ve been able to receive and will pursue theatre as a hobby in my adulthood. However, being at GPFAA also allowed me to realize that theatre is not my destined career or something I would pursue professionally after high school. As fun and fulfilling as theatre is, I believe I have a different purpose on earth, I want to interact with people on a more personal level than theatre allows and nursing is truly what I believe I was meant to

“If theatre were available during the school day for all students, it would allow most students to experience the joy of theatre, even those who wouldn’t necessarily try it outside of school.” For Mueller, theatre has proven an integral part of her education, identity, and now even her career. A 2008 State High alumna, she reflects on her SCASD experience: “My best memories are from high school when I had the opportunity to sing in many choirs and perform with the State High Thespians,” said Mueller.…

On the night of Saturday, November 19, I attended the North Carolina Theatre production of Monty Python’s Spamalot. This was part of a five-night run at Raleigh Memorial Auditorium, part of the Duke Energy Center complex. It was a cold, brisk night, and the warm glow from Memorial Auditorium beckoned to me to enter. The auditorium inside in the biggest concert space I have been to not called an arena. Walking in at the second floor, the auditorium spilled out in front of me, welcoming, with large chandeliers and rich red seats.…

Dr. Williams, Thank-you for the support you have given the Theatre Arts program over the past 3 years. As we continue to grow, I believe the schedule outlined below will permit more students to participate in the productions, particularly those involved in other related arts classes and athletics. While it won’t cut out on after school rehearsals completely, my plan is to reserve either after school and/or before school rehearsals for select solo, small group or choreography work Additionally scheduling the big school musical between winter and spring sports seasons, or after the spring season concludes, will provide the opportunity to have the necessary 2 hour tech and dress rehearsals. I spoke with Coach Werts who said there is about a 3 week period of time between winter and spring sports where there are no athletic practices.…

A blue haze is washed over the stage as the lights suspended above cast shadows on the stage floor. Gobos light up the stage and spots pan over the audience, pulling in every sense of intrigue and curiosity within the audience. A ringtone is heard as the stage lights dim, a man appears in a spotlight leaning, virtually reaching out, but he seems to hold himself back, delaying the phone call for fear of what it might be. In Things I Know To Be True, Andrew Bovell shines light on a modern day Australian family and reveals an unacknowledged truth about the struggles we face within our own families.…

"Actors to places. " I tap my fingers restlessly on the first page of my binder, waiting to hear the OK from my Assistant Stage Manager backstage. Opening night is always a bottle of anticipation. I hear the orchestra tuning their instruments, the music disjointed but with such a harmonious structure. The lights have just gone down and the audience members find their seats quickly.…

Throughout high-school I have been heavily involved in the performing arts program. I feel that my association with this program has not only taught me important trades and lessons to use while furthering my performance career, but it has also given me valuable relationships and educational experiences that have influenced my life in a positive way and will continue to shape my life and assist with my endeavors beyond high-school. I have participated in multiple theatrical productions throughout my four years of high school and I also am in the show choir, jazz ensemble, and women’s choir. This particular study abroad program encompasses so much of the history and craft that goes into my major. As an artist of the theatre, I need to be aware of the historical significance of theatre and the stories that have been written. Seeing, reading, and visiting monuments and plays will make the history that I’ve learned in class tangible. Attending productions will further allow my creativity as an artist to flourish with diverse genres of theatre that will be available on the trip. Hopefully, I will be able to employ ideas and new techniques that I research when I arrive back at Furman and beyond.…

There is nothing mystical or magical about Brecht’s plays: everything is on view, and the audience never forgets they are in a theatre. Brecht likes relates his theatre to a sporting event. Sports fans are familiar with the rules of the games they watch, and will argue vociferously with the referees when they disagree with a call. As our notes about Brechtian technique on October 29th said, “Brechtian technique always refers to the combination of a particular stage technique with a political point of view.” Alex, Taylor, George, and I performed about “2016 CSU Presidential Election.”…

I attended the University Theatre Fall Concert on Thursday, November, 18. As a whole the production was very well put together and I found it to be very entertaining. Some of the dances, in my opinion, were very good and then some of them I did not exactly understand. All of the dancers did a very outstanding job and their hard work showed in the production. The dress for the dances were all very uniform and most of them were things that were easy for the dancers to move in comfortably.…

Stage and film acting both require a well-stocked tool box of techniques, but they differ in several significant ways. Here are a few key areas. Sequence and Arc Screen acting schools often stress to incoming students that screen and stage acting differ in a variety of ways -- and one of the first points may be that the way an actor experience known as character arc is different in the two media. Character arc refers to where a particular character is mentally and emotionally in the story at a given point. S/he typically changes in some way throughout the story, and on stage and screen, the audience sees this unfold chronologically, but films are shot out of sequence.…
