A considerable section of the Muslim population wear the Hijab as a symbol of devotion to the Islamic teachings which demand modesty as part of the commandments of Allah. For the women who wear the Hijab as a religious devotion to Islamic teaching, they usually accompany it with loose non-revealing clothing as per the Islamic commandments of modesty. Other sets of women wear the Hijab not as a religious obligation but rather as a symbol of the Muslim identity (Arabsinamerica.unc.edu). The women in this state of mind wear this religious clothing as a means of differentiating them from the rest of the population that practices different faiths. The Hijab remains a target for the rest of the world who have come to associate the dress code to that of the radical terrorist groups. The laws and regulations imposed on women by the seemingly dominant males in the religion conform to the characteristic of hegemony described by Antonio Gramsci. The dress code is used to objectify women who face the threat of violence or worse In case they choose not to wear the Hijab. This is despite the fact that the Islamic teachings do not specify that it is a must to dress in a certain manner. The ambiguity of dressing in modesty is to blame for this lapse in interpretation of the demands of the Islamic faith.
