Según la concepción que tiene de sí misma, así será”(Anzaldua 2012:105) Comandante Ramona perfectly embodies this concept, she had a clear concept of who she was and a strong understanding of her power. She challenged a perpetual line of traditional and systematic oppression toward indigenous women in Mexico. In 1994, the year in which I was born, she changed the course of history by reconstructing all of the misconceptions and gender roles attributed to indigenous women. Now, 10 years after her death, her legacy still lives and is greatly molding the life of contemporary Mexicanas and Chicanas. Contemporary Neozapatismo and Chicana feminism are parallel sociocultural/revolutionary movements in which indigenousness and liminality are the bases of the movement. La Comandante Ramona as a co-author of “La ley revolucionaria de las Mujeres” introduced the topic of gender to the Zapatista movement, shifting the movement’s attention toward intersectionalities. In a similar matter, contemporary Chicana new paradigm of Chicana feminism is rooted on the concept of intersectionalitites. Ramona was not an Adelita or Soldadera. Like many mujeres Zapatistas, after her, she was a commander, a leader, an advocate for her community, and ultimately a woman with agency.
