The Irish Culture: Northern Irish The island of Ireland is known as Eire in Irish Gaelic. The name of the capital city, Belfast, comes from the city’s Gaelic name, Beal Feirste, meaning “ mouth of the sandy ford.” Northern Ireland is located on the second largest island of the British Isles and is the smallest country in the United Kingdom. It is separated from the Republic of Ireland by a three-hundred-mile long artificial boundary. In the 2011 the total populations was 1.811 million, an increase of 125,800 (7.5%) since the last census ten years ago.
