The mystery of the Zodiac killer is still unsolved. He was never caught and could possibly be dead or still at large. The Zodiac began his killings in the late 1960’s attacking couples who were in secluded areas. Like Rader he sought attention from the police and media through letters. The Zodiac killer also used coded messages that he sent to each newspaper in the area and said in his letter that “if they didn’t print the cipher in the newspaper, he would kill again.” He also went on and noted that he believed that “all of the people that he killed would be his slaves in the afterlife.” You could tell that he was hungry for power and would stop at nothing to get it. He loved that fact that people were so afraid of him hurting someone else that they would do whatever he said. The Zodiac killer is responsible for at least 5 killings in the San Francisco area and there could certainly be more. In 2004 a representative of the San Francisco police department said that the Zodiac case had been placed in an inactive status, which basically means that since there was no evidence linking anyone to the case the killer got away with his crimes. There had been a vast amount of people claiming to know who the killer was and “Arthur Leigh Allen was a popular candidate for the Zodiac killer, having been identified as Hartnell and Mageau as their attacker.” However DNA evidence did not link Allen to any of the crimes. In 2007 David Fincher released “Zodiac” a movie made about the Zodiac killer. This is, once again, glorifying serial killers. In the United States alone “Zodiac” has grossed over 33 million dollars. Any serial killer would be at the peak of their demented satisfaction to know that a movie about them had made this large sum of money. For all we know the killer could still be alive and is sitting back ecstatic about the

The stereotypical serial killer is generally a pretty new idea. When H.H. Holmes as discovered to have murdered at least 25 people at the Chicago World’s Fair, the murders shocked the world. Nobody had heard of one person killing that many people before. It was foreign to society and the media had a field day. Since H. H. Holmes serial killings have become more common. Were more aware of their existence and they’re a part of popular culture, so were less shocked by mass killings than we were when H.H. Holmes established himself as the world’s first serial killer. While reactions to serial killers are still extremely negative, they don’t come close to the reaction from the original Chicago World’s fair murders.…

The Zodiac Killer was believed to have been responsible for at least five murders in Northern California in the 1960’s, although it is possible he could be responsible for more than just the five. The first confirmed Zodiac killing was on December 20, 1968, when 17-year-old David Faraday and his 16-year-old girlfriend Betty Lou Jensen were shot to death near their car on the outskirts of Vallejo, California. The second killing was on July 5, 1969, when Darlene Ferrin, 22, and her boyfriend, Mike Mageau, 19, were sitting in parked car in Vallejo when they were approached by a man with a flashlight who fired multiple shots at them, killing Ferrin and seriously wounding Mageau. The concept of serial killers seems to draw tons of attention from the public eye. One of the reasons why it intrigues numerous people is because no one truly comprehends the reasons as to why the serial killer kills. Nevertheless, there are many case studies and research to attempt to explain this phenomenon. Of course, the nature of the events has changed but, when Jack the Ripper was such a terror invoking topic for the citizens of London in the late 1880s, criminologists quickly became aware of the impact that coverage of the events had. This occurrence of replicated crimes being committed around the time frames of popular serial killers continued into the early 1990s. The incessant sensationalized style of reporting that occurred during the late 70s about the Zodiac Killer resulted in the same effect. Day after day, more articles arose about the Zodiac Killer striking again, and each time released these grim details regarding the murders. Research shows that these articles published and the amount of momentum the Zodiac Killer’s story had behind it, directly caused the explosion of copycats that…

I think people are fascinated with serial killers because the acts that they have committed are so jarring to society as a whole. To me, serial killers are fascinating because of how so many of them are able to continually keep up a façade in their everyday lives, and then commit acts so heinous at the same time. For example, Ted Bundy was a student at the University of Utah law school by day but would murder and commit necrophilia in Emigration Canyon by night. It is interesting how many of these people are able to go undetected for such long periods of time because of how well they blend in with society, even though there is something wrong with them. The act of serial killing itself helps to reinstate how impactful it is to take a person’s…

A lot of people want to blame the parents of the offenders, asking “what did you turn your child into?” 36% of serial killers were physically abused, 26% were sexually abused, and 50% were psychologically abused (Mitchell and Aamodt 45). Many people have logically come to the conclusion that just because someone is abused, it does not mean that they will become a serial killer; or even a murderer; which is true. In the general population (people who have never committed murder) only 6% are physically abused, 3% are sexually abused, and 2% are psychologically abused (Mitchell and Aamodt 45). The dramatic difference of abuse frequency between people who are serial killers and people who are not seems evident enough to support that serial killers are created. What this study does not take into consideration, is that among the general population abuse is underreported because many individuals who have suffered from abuse do not readily admit that they have been abused. In contrast abuse is likely over reported by people who commit heinous crimes in an effort to win sympathy from the jury. It is possible that if both the general population and the serial killer population were completely honest and the statistics were more accurate, than the difference between abuse frequency in the populations were not be as dramatic. There are many similarities besides just abuse in the childhood of most serial killers, “many were sons of prostitutes” and most had either absent or abusive fathers (Miller 138). Something unique to serial killers that is not found in normal people or even people who have committed murder that are not serial killers, is that “Unlike delusional psychotic murderers, serial murderers do know right from wrong” (Miller 138). According to law, a person is “not guilty by reason of insanity” if they do not have the capacity to know right from wrong, therefore;…

Ted was born November 24, 1946 in Burlington, Vermont. Unlike Dahmer, who was born into a happy family, Bundy was born into a life of secrecy. Bundy’s mother Eleanor Cowell was only twenty two and unmarried when she had Ted. To keep it a secret Eleanor took her newborn to her parents in Philadelphia. His grandparents adopted him and raised him to believe that his mother was his sister. According to Davin Hiskey, Bundy found out when his cousin mocked him and showed him his birth certificate. A few years later, 1951, Eleanor moved herself and Ted to Washington and there she married Johnnie Bundy. His morbid personality became prevalent at an early age. According to bio online, he had an unusual interest in macabre and knives. Bio online also says that he was a shy child but incredibly smart, excelling in school. But just like Dahmer he didn’t do so well socially. And as a teenager he again started to show his dark side, he peered into strangers windows and didn’t give a second thought to stealing from anyone. It didn’t take long for him to crack. In college he started dating a wealthy, beautiful young woman from California. He fell so deeply in love with her that when they broke up he wasn’t the only one who was devastated. Many people are aware of Serial Killers, specifically male serial killers. But, what we don’t see or hear much of is female serial killers. Although they have similarities, they also have differences. Male serial killers frequently commit kidnapping, rape, and mutilation to express their rage and desire for control; female serial killers usually throw themselves straight into the killing. Furthermore, while for many male serial killers, death is only a conclusion to their fantasy or a function of it, females kill to kill. It’s their mode of expression. According to Harrison, a Penn State psychology professor, he said “Female serial killers are a rarely studied phenomenon, perhaps because of culturally ingrained notions that women would…

Horror movies are all about that initial physiological reaction, such as racing heart and sweaty palms. They do this through the use of fear and shocking the audience. One film that does exactly is Silence of the Lambs. A serial killer known as Buffalo Bill is murdering women, and partially skinning them. FBI student Clarice Starling tries to seek insight on Hannibal Lecter, a serial killer and cannibal, in an attempt to get information on serial killer Buffalo Bill's identity.
