Not too long ago the Zika virus was making headlines and warnings were pushed to Americans traveling to tropical regions. Although this issue isn’t buzzing in the news more recently, danger has not disappeared and studies are still being conducted to answer the big question: how is the Zika virus crossing the placenta and affecting the fetus? The Zika virus can be transmitted through mosquito bites, from an infected pregnant mother to her fetus and through sexual intercourse. The CDC is one organization that is interested in improving health outcomes related to the Zika virus. I find it outstanding that the CDC provides support to healthcare care providers as they counsel women infected during pregnancy. The CDC also supports planning at the federal, state, and local levels for clinics and other services needed by families affected by Zika. The CDC is also working hard to studying Zika’s pathogenesis and epidemiology, while further studying mosquito species. The CDC is working on antiviral drugs and studying how the virus binds to cells. I find it important that organizations like the CDC make it their mission to study in depth the aspects of diseases and publish safety warnings and prevention techniques to the public. Some prevention techniques that the CDC and EPA recommend include wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants when traveling in Zika prone areas. It’s also important to stay in air conditioned or screened-in buildings. Additionally, the CDC recommends condom usage to prevent sexual transmission of the

According to the CDC, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the best method to treat the Zika virus is to rest, stay hydrated, and to employ pain relieving medication. With no specific treatment, the cases involving Microcephaly will continuously increase, hence, a growing number of children will suffer from the effects of it. Microcephaly, similar to any medical disorder, has more than one impact. For example, children diagnosed with this condition may experience problems such as seizures or hearing loss, therefore contributing to the urgent need for a cure. Although no vaccines are available as of now, scientists continue to work hard to invent one for overcoming Zika.…

Recently discovered Zika has swept the world off its feet. This dangerous disease is spread mostly through the bite of an infected species of mosquito. Primarily targeting pregnant women, it can be passed down from mom to fetus and in turn cause certain malicious birth defects. Before last year, the virus was a miniscule, controlled, barely noted annoyance. Scientists are now beginning to consider environmental chances that encouraged Zika's explosion into a global crisis.…

In the summer of 2012, my uncle came down with West Nile Encephalitis and passed away from it two months later. Subsequently, in the summer of 2014, my dad came down with West Nile fever, and survived. West Nile is a potentially deadly virus that is carried by birds and transmitted to mosquitos. Mosquitos then transmit it to horses and humans, and even back to the birds, which continues the cycle when the mosquitos bite the infected birds. Humans can then transmit it to other humans through blood transfusions and organ transplants.…

Eighty percent of people who carry the Zika virus never have symptoms. In those who do, the most recurrent Zika virus symptoms are rash and fever; it can also cause joint and muscle pain, headache, pain behind the eyes, and conjunctivitis (itchy, red eyes), as stated by the World Health Organization (WHO). Health experts at the WHO Regional Office for the Americas have observed that symptoms generally last two to seven days. Unusual complications may comprise internal bleeding, which provoked the first U.S. Zika-related death in Puerto Rico in April. Nine deaths as of 10/27/2016 have been imputed to Zika virus in the recent epidemic.…

There was a severe outbreak of the Zika virus in Brazil infecting more than 1 million people and it gradually increases to infect individuals in the Western Hemisphere as it rapidly spreads. World Health Organization claims that between January 2014 and February 2016, a total of 33 countries have reported autochthonous circulation of Zika virus (World Health Organization, 2016). The Zika virus is not as deadly in comparison to viruses like Ebola, on the other hand, it does have deleterious effects on individuals. Centers of Disease Control and Preventation statistically analyzed that about 1 in 5 people that get infected with the Zika virus become ill (Centers of Disease Control and Preventation, 2016).
