The Young Men Christian's Association (YMCA) Analysis

The Young Men Christian’s Association (YMCA) originally started in 1844, founded by Sir George Williams (Ingols, Ladge, & McNett, 2012). The original intent was to improve the quality of life for young men in London, England (Ingols, Ladge, & McNett, 2012). It offered support and services for visiting sailors, World War I refugees and prisoners, as well as assisted African American soldiers as they returned to the segregated South (Ingols, Ladge, & McNett, 2012). After World War I and World War II, the YMCA expanded its efforts while playing a major role in urban communities across the United States. With the expansions in branches and services, the YMCA launched the East Boston branch. The East Boston YMCA is a part of the YMCA of Greater Boston, which happens to be the largest provider of social services in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (YMCA of Greater Boston, 2015). The East Boston branch was founded in 1999 in response to the community needing childcare services and after school programming.
