One of the first similarities is the theme of the two pieces. In the first article “The Yellow Wallpaper” the theme of oppression casts the view that it can cause severe mental damage. The main character in the story is determined to have depression, her husband who is a doctor believes that isolation will be the best thing to help her, although throughout the story you begin to learn that isolation is no the best answer. “I am getting angry enough to do something desperate. To jump out of the window would be admirable exercise, but the bars are too strong even to try” (Gilman 12). The author tells us this, as a sign that the loneliness is beginning to become too much, that she wants to get out of the room. This supports the theme of oppression because it shows that the prolonged isolation has made her become even sicker than before. In Gilman’s article she uses the first person point of view. We know this because the author is telling the story from her point of view. “I don’t like our room one bit” states Gilman (3). The author uses the word "I" and the word "our" that tells us that it is coming from her point of view. In Baca’s article he also uses the first person point of view. Baca states, “ I see small white farmers selling out”(1). Baca uses the word I and tells the story through what he sees and uses his experiences and encounters to support his argument.
