The Yellow Wallpaper And Metamorphosis Comparison Essay

In both, “The Yellow Wallpaper”, and “The Metamorphosis” the characters have an obvious lack of communication and connection. In “The Yellow Wallpaper”, the narrator is silenced many times by her husband and or Doctor which happen to be the same person. In “The Metamorphosis”, the son Gregor is silenced not by his family but by his new transformation. In both, “The Yellow Wallpaper”, and “The Metamorphosis” Gregor and the narrator are silenced not by their own choice or actions but by circumstances out of their control. In “The Yellow Wallpaper,” from the beginning the narrator speaks of how she believes that her husband belittles her thoughts and concerns along with the illness that she has. Her “treatment” requires that she is to do absolutely no working or writing, and very little activity. This causes the narrator to hide the journal that she keeps from her husband, immediately causing a lack of communication, connection, and distrust. The narrator speaks of how writing in her journal is a relief, “(I would not say it to a living soul, of course, but this is dead paper and a great relief to my mind)”(Vol. E, pg 824). Other than the occasional visit from family members on holidays, the narrator only speaks to her husband and her journal.
