What this means to me is that you have a strong affection to someone or something and if something happens you can become very sad or the person can hurt you. In the story Mirror Image by Lena Coakley, I think that both the parents of Alice and Gail were extremely torn and in pain because of their situation. Mirror image is about two girls Alice and Gail. Alice had a brain transplant into Gail’s body because she was brain dead. It was the first successful brain transplant, she was very popular in the news because of this. Gail’s parents Mr and Mrs. Jarred were very upset after letting the doctors put Alice’s brain into Gail’s body because they thought they would get Gail back, but they didn’t because it’s just Alice in Gail’s body. Gail’s mother and father are suffering because they see their daughter Gail but it’s really just Alice. Mr. Jarred see’s her out around town and talks to Alice. He talks to her and then before they part says how “[he] looked into [Alice’s] eyes and [he] didn’t see [his] daughter(18)”. This gives him some closure but it is still very painful because it is hard to let go of someone very close to you like a family member when you see them different places you go. Alice’s parents and family are also in a lot of pain because they have to get used to seeing their daughter in a different body for the rest of their life. This story is about a new mother and her husband going to a cottage to get away from society. The mother has postpartum depression which can happen after a baby is born. Postpartum depression is a mood disorder that can affect both parents of the child, it is when you feel extreme sadness, stress, anxiety or don’t feel affection towards the baby and don’t want to be around the child. The main character knows that something is wrong with her and tells her husband and brother who are both physicians but they “[do] not believe [she is] sick! And what can one do(1)”. In the time this story was created mental illness was not very common or well known so that is probably why they do not believe her. Her husband thinks that it is best to get a nanny and keep her away from society so they take a vacation. Her husband isolates her in a small room with yellow wallpaper hence the name. During the story she wants to leave but the husband doesn’t think that it’s best to.The mother turns crazy because she is kept in the small room constantly, at the end “[she] got out at last… and [her husband] can’t put her back(10)”. This shows that because of the baby it caused her to go into a deep depression.
