The book was brought to the existence because of the survivor of the holocaust Sylvia Perlmutter, without her nobody would actually know what the true brutality of the holocaust was like, because most survivors would rather not speak of there experience and what it was like. The book is written word from word of all that she’s been through as a child surviving the Ghettos. The ghettos is small apartments, where they shoved thousands of Jews, from all over. The Jews were forced to leave there real homes into these apartments. All of this took place around the merge into world war II. The Jews had no rights whatsoever they actually had to wear big yellow stars on their chest to clarify that they were Jews, and if they were to take it off they would be shot right where they stand without warning. Slowly living in the ghetto the hurt of the change in their lives start to kick in. Sylvia’s older sister Dora had to lie about her age to get a job so that she could help provide. Sylvia was only 4 years old when all of this takes place, so she is to little to do anything. Her parents and sister didn’t make very much money with there little jobs, they didn’t have much food to choose from with the little they made and also with the little the soldiers of the ghetto provided. One day, one of the girls she played with and was very close to disappeared.Nobody knew what happened to her or where she went, but they were sure the soldiers had something to do with it. The soldiers just kept shoving more and more thousands of jews in this harsh community. People often died of starvation, or freezing to death in their apartments, because they didn’t have heat. Also there were many sicknesses, and diseases, caused by the over population of people there in the ghetto. As a couple years go by the soldiers make an announcement that all the children would be removed in place in better environments, but it was an set up. The kids were being taken to concentration camps and being killed. Sylvia’s father was very brave, and smart. He didn’t let the soldiers get her or her sister, her sister was able to prove to the soldiers that she wasn’t a child so they didn’t bother her. Sylvia on the other hand would be taken, but her dad came up with a plan to protect her from being taken. They hid in a cemetery until the soldiers were done looking in there apartment unit. But sooner the soldier caught on to the trick and search the cemetery, where also other families were hiding to. Others weren 't so lucky but Sylvia and her father were able to escape, and sylvia was
