Social and cultural responses to 9/11 included a greater focus on family (and the time people spent with them), a higher church attendance, and an increase in patriotism, which was obvious in the large amount of American flags that were flying after the event. The media, such as TV and radio, focussed broadcasts around 9/11 as a topic and “theme”. And on the religious side, the attacks either strengthened people’s faith or made them lose it altogether.
Another significant social consequence of 9/11 at the time and today is racism. An increase in hate crimes and harassment towards Muslims, South Asians, Arabs and turban-wearers (which are usually stereotypically associated with Muslims/Arabs) was reported in the days following the events of 9/11, including the murder of a non-Muslim turban-wearing man in Arizona on September 15th, just four days after the event. Today, in the older generation, racism certainly is still a large consequence of the fact, which can be seen with the older generation thinking Muslims make unsuitable
