Don Murray: The Writing Process

The Writing Process
According to Don Murray (1972), “The writing process itself can be divided into three stages: pre-writing, writing, and rewriting” (p.2). the statement is true for most American students today. But Writing can be challenging due to a different personality, background, and culture. For someone like me, a student for whom English is not the first language, it is often difficult to know the correct format and really express your true understanding of what you’re reading. I remember my English teacher used to talk about what the writing process meant, and I never understood until this day. Murray’s breakdown of the writing process is straight forward and much easier to understand.

For instance, this is very slow and difficult process. I always have a hard time doing this process. I frustrated and thinking and finally nothing to say, but it works. It happens to all my friends, they just return to planning and pre-writing process. They fear that they will not be able to think of anything to say, or that if they do find something to say it will be wrong. It is not an indication of poor writing but they care about how they present themselves. In fact, writing is not easy as some people think even though if you are a perfect writer. They return to parts of it again and again in order to get it right. For me, it is important to make time for multiple drafts during the writing process. In the article, “Invitation to the Writer” Janet Burroway says, “when you study a piece of writing as a student of literature, you focus understanding what is there on the page and how the parts fit together, in order to tease out the story’s significance.” It means when we start study literature, we will see that all ideas clearly and fit together. A student with good study skills perform better in college writing and receiving a good grade. Studying every day is necessary for college students to improve writing. Since it helps to absorbs the time, keep a student from falling the classes since they are able to completely understand all concept and have good skill of writing many of them doing tutor job in sierra

Donald Murray meticulously developed and laid out ten writing habits he performs in order to hone in on his writing potential. After a self evaluation I came to the realization I possess similar to habits to those of Mr. Murray, but I also have my own. The habit of awareness and connecting seem to interconnect for me. The book How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster immediately came to mind. Foster discusses various interpretations of literature through quests, communion, themes, and of course symbols because “Everything is a symbol of something, it seems, until proven otherwise.”…

Sadly, this is not the case at all. Lamott gives the reader “the idea of shitty first drafts. All good writers write them.” (21) This sections helped me understand that my shitty first draft is not the death of me. First drafts are meant to be shitty because they help us put all our ideas down on paper and then make the fantastic second draft we can because we already make mistakes and got all our bad ideas out, and now all we must do is reorganize, touch it up, and make it flow perfectly.…

In the quote from Writing Without Teachers, Peter Elbow talks about his ideas on the process of writing. He says, “think of writing as an organic, developmental process in which you start writing at the very beginning – before you know your meaning at all – and encourage your words gradually to change and evolve” (Elbow). Elbow believes that you can’t know what you are going to discuss or to comment on until you are done writing and all of your thoughts finally come together to make sense. He also goes against the idea that writing is only a two-step process, saying that this is the wrong method to go about writing and is a backwards way of thinking. I agree with Elbow’s ideas because this is how I think about the writing process, and is how I write most of the time.…

I agree with your viewpoint of Donald Murray's refection of all writing. The writer's viewpoints will always be capable of reflective of their individual experiences and observations, reception and perceptions, especially from the early years of life. Though writing may fall in the category of fiction or non-fiction, the details works will always be written in a reaction to certain marked effects. Experiences are responsible for shaping ones view point whether it is written with a few more influencing or in accordance with fact or reality-- all is written from an account of a person's life, written by that…

Writers have to get over the idea that writing is a wholly creative process, and that editing is a cerebral shift into cold concretes. Editing is a creative endeavor. It’s a reapplication of ideas that affects everything from the macro elements of a story to its semantics. Personally, I don’t know anyone who claims to get it right the first time — and someone who says otherwise is probably either lying or too willfully blind to recognize shit when they read it. The creative mind is a messy place; you’re simply not going to translate abstractions from the place you dream into a palpable written message without a few translation errors at the beginning.…

The writing process has a lot of steps; some of those steps worked well for me such as: generating ideas, listing supporting ideas and details, and drafting. The only reason for why it worked well is because, I just have to write freely, and randomly without any care even if I wrote some unnecessary and meaningless ideas. The same also goes when I draft; grammar, organization, and spelling were the least of my problems because, first drafts are not perfect. However, there are steps that have not worked well for me; for the reason that, doing those steps took me a long time to do. Those steps are polishing, and forming a good topic sentence; they took me almost an hour and a half to finish.…

During this semester of English W131, I have experienced both accomplishments and setbacks while learning how to improve my writing skills. Throughout the course, I have learned that writing is not only about how much information is in the paper, but also about how well the writer’s thoughts are expressed throughout the text. Practicing many different styles of writing as I did in the class has helped me tremendously with my delivery in my writing. I believe that this course was one to prepare us for future writing courses with professors we will encounter who will give us feedback that may puzzle us because it will require more work and more thinking. Although I have had difficulty in the class, I do believe that I have learned from my mistakes and that I am finishing the course with stronger writing skills that will help me though the rest of my college career and life.…

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

In order to be a productive writer, we must start by putting our creative minds to the test and letting our fingers follow. In his article The Process Writing Method (2002), Daniel J. Jarvis summarizes the Process Writing approach as outlined in Gail Heald-Taylor’s book, Whole Language Strategies for ESL Students (1994). Jarvis claims that the method has played an important role in teaching throughout his career. He describes the method while providing examples from his own experience as an ESL teacher.
