English Class Analysis

English classes have always been a required course in all of my years in school. As a student at Granada Hills Charter High School I have had the pleasure of having four different English teachers all with distinct teaching styles and assignments. It is in these classes that I have evolved as an English student, and discovered aspects about English that I do and do not enjoy. In my freshman year of high school I had a teacher who would begin each class by giving us fifteen to twenty minutes of individual silent reading. I really enjoyed this part of the class, because I like to read. However, in most other English classes that I had prior to this one reading felt like more of a chore and something I was forced to do. In this class I got to …show more content…
Some of the required readings were Romeo and Juliet, The Odyssey, and some poetry. In this class the way we went about reading the text was during class a volunteer or a chosen victim would read a couple of passages out loud and the teacher would aid in helping us understand what was going on and the analysis behind what we just read. When we were done with the readings we would usually have to write an essay on a topic about the text. The topics were for the most part chosen by the teacher. At the time I considered it a good thing because one of my weaknesses in writing is choosing a topic to write about. Once I decide on a topic the rest comes easy to me, getting started is the hardest part for me. One of the things I disliked about essays in that class was that if, I remember correctly every essay assigned in that class had the five-paragraph structure. I can see why the teacher liked the structure, because it required us to have quotes and evidence from the text followed by our analysis. It also made sure that we did not leave out a topic and concluding sentence. However, I felt like it limited our ideas, or forced us to put in something that really did serve much of a purpose in the essay just to fit the structure. Although I was not a fan of the …show more content…
Again we would read a couple passages, and then discuss them. When we finished reading our book we would again right an essay about it. The essays again were in the five paragraph structure; the difference with this teacher was that she gave us more freedom in the topics of our essays. In some cases we were able to choose our own topic, or if she chose it she would give us at least two topics to choose from. There were some assignments in this class that were different than my previous English class. One of the writing assignments that stuck out to me the most was a tribute speech we had to write about someone who has done something that has contributed to society. I wrote about President Obama’s speech about race in America. I thought this assignment was both fun and interesting because we got learn about someone else, and the assignment was unique. My sophomore year class was not too different from my freshman

Observation Report: Writing Assignment The writing assignment that I observed was a literary analysis that describes the theme of “The Cask of Amontillado” through his display of the main character’s motives. The students were instructed to provide specific examples from the text, as well as clear reasoning that explains and connects their evidence to their response. The day that I was there to observe the class the mentor teacher was finishing the unit by having the students write a five paragraph essay using a worksheet packet that they had been working on for the past several days.…

A Wonderful Year Taught by the Wizard of Maz This year in Mrs. Mazur’s AP Language class, the students learned a lot of useful skills in rhetorical writing. The essays at the beginning helped in preparing the students for the actual AP Language test at the end of the year. The vocabulary packets helped in broadening the pupils’ vocabulary which led to better word choice in their essays. Basically, everything in Mrs. Mazur’s AP Language class helped in one way or another.…

Accelerated English 4 has been a class that has been one of my best English classes. The class taught me many new techniques along with improving my skills that I already knew, though not all were improved. My strength in vocabulary was still as high as it was while my ability to transition had improved quite well, though my ability to create a well styled paper was still suffering. When Accelerated English 4 started there was no excitement about the papers I would have to write.…

For example, his sophomore English teacher Mr. Mitropetros would make students read out loud Julius Caesar which is a required reading from the district. He just had students read all year long, but that wasn’t teaching students anything. I had no experience with teachers like this because every book I read required an essay, tests and quizzes. 2. Voc.…

It was a cold, winter morning. The frigid air blew as I turned to pull the handle on the door to the main building of my small high school. After entering the doorway, I dragged my feet across the floor and trudged through the empty hallway. As I peeked through each of the door windows, I saw nothing but dark, empty classrooms. It was not until I looked up that I noticed one lit room at the end of the hall.…

To me, writing is just ok, nothing special. It definitely isn’t something I get excited about. My first formal writing class was in 6th grade, where we followed The Institute for Excellence in Writing’s curriculum. My fellow classmates and I mainly wrote short, 1-3 paragraph reports on various historical topics. I did well in these classes, I just never really enjoyed the process of writing.…

Made it through another semester This semester I learned that some of us read and write more then we think we on a daily basis. There are different ways of reading and writing outside of the classroom. All the reading assignments were intriguing, and I thought critically because of the questions that were asked. I teach "Introduction to Literature" and "Standard Freshman Composition" courses at Suffolk County Community College. I personally design both of my courses, which adhere to the mission statement of the college. In "Introduction to Literature," my students engage in imaginative works of literature, analyze major literary themes and forms, continue training in effective prose writing skills, and demonstrate maturity and thought and style when deconstructing literary elements such as image, plot, character, theme, and conflict. In "Standard Freshman Composition," I prepare my students to produce quality work that utilizes writing techniques, analyzes reading material, and incorporates research techniques that will aide them in their academic future. The outcomes of this course are for the student to be able to construct a central purpose in their expository work, to have coherent organization, improved writing mechanics, to formulate effective thesis statements that demonstrate complex thought, and to integrate relevant, cited sources into their work.…

There probably was not a single English class in which I did not give my input daily. It was easy to make my voice heard, because frankly there were a lot of slackers in high school. A lot of the students didn’t read the material, or just didn’t care enough to get involved in discussions. I’ve found this is typically not the case in college. I noticed that in my W131 class nearly everyone spoke up during our class discussions.…

These were very interesting and had everyone that read the stories engaged. A lot of the time many of the students had different opinions stories which led to a very interesting debate. Later on, we'd have a short paper prompt, or a Blog do about the same thing we talked about in class. This really helps with academic arguments because we all have our own opinion and it makes us more interested to write about our ideas. This is one of the main reasons why writing has been very fun for me.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…

In sixth grade, my literature teacher was very assertive and arrogant. This alone gave me a bad impression of the class which spread into my reading education. It was also the first experience I had of keeping a log of my reading, which has been the bane of my existance since I was first introduced to it. Additionally, the teacher recommended to me a number of books that I hated. All of these problems compounded to decrease my reading time.…
