“I will punish the world for it’s evil, the wicked for their sins. I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty and will humble the pride of the ruthless” As this verse in Isaiah 13:11 says the wicked will get punished for their sins, much like all three characters of The Scarlet Letter; Hester, Dimmesdale, and Chillingworth eventually got punished in the book, by ultimately dying at the end. But the ultimate question is, which of the three previously mentioned character is the most wicked and has the most unforgivable sins? Well the answer is very easy to find in context of the book, and the answer is Hester Prynn. Hester Prynn is biggest sinner because of her original sin and the parallel between Hester and Eve from the classic BIble …show more content…
To prove the similarities it is imperative to compare the stories. In the story of Adam and Eve there are two characters who commit the original sin, Adam and Eve; just like in the Scarlet Letter the two who commit the beginning sin are Hester and Dimmesdale. This similarity could be written off as pure coincidence which is why the author made sure to add other nuances like expulsion. In Adam and Eve, after the two eat the forbidden fruit they are cast away from the Garden of Eden, just like Hester was cast away when she moved to the outskirts of the town, and Dimmesdale when he confessed his sin and gave up his position in the church. This proves similarities between the two stories because all the characters became excluded and kicked out of a place or a positions, which proves that the consequences where the same. Another similarity is the knowledge that came with the aftermath. In the creation story Adam and Eve eat out of the tree of knowledge and began to uncover basic facts about humans and what it means to be humans, and experience the judgments, just like Hester and DImmesdale experienced the same thing, Hester experiences the cruelness of human giving her knowledge of the puritan faith and its inner workings, and it gave Dimmesdale the knowledge of how hypocritical the puritan faith was. It is obcial that the …show more content…
In Genesis chapter three God figures out that Adam and Eve ate from the tree and begins punishing them. Adam says “The woman you put here with me”, the Lord says “Since you listened to the woman”. Those two statements implies that the woman sinned worse, because she was the one who tempted the man, just like Hester tempted Dimmesdale to have sexual relations with her, even when Hester knew she had a husband. Those quotes also prove that Hester and Eve were the ones to start the sin, causing Dimmesdale and Adam to fall, and it also makes Chillingworth no where close to being the biggest sinner since he was just heartbroken over his wife having an affair with another man. Since Hester and Eve both started the transgression it easily makes them the biggest sinners, because if they never tempted there male partners it is questionable if Eve and Adam would have been kicked out of the garden, and if Hester would have to wear the scarlet letter.

In summary it is easy to see why Hester is the worst sinner because of original sin, and her parallels with Eve from the Bible. Even though all three character are guilty with original sin, if Hester had not committed her sin, Dimmesdale would have never sinned and neither would Chillingworth, which proves that Hester Prynn is the worst sinner, and will be punished just like Isaiah 13:11

There is also an overall recognition and acceptance of the existence of witches by all of the characters mentioned in the stories. However, there are multiple differences that arise when examining both of Hawthorne’s works. The first difference is found in the name that is used to talk about Satan.…
