What seems to be like a normal yearly class trip from Culver Middle School to Washington D.C., suddenly goes wrong when two boys named Wyatt Palmer and Matthew Diaz are seated next to two guys that seem suspicious. The two men are talking in another language, looking at aerial shots of the White House, and hiding something in their backpack they refuse to let go. They go on a chase throughout Washington, exploring all of the monuments, and figure out clever ways to escape from their clueless teachers. While doing all of that, Wyatt Palmer tries to impress the girl of his dreams that is with him on the trip named Suzana Delgado who is a “goddess”, according to Wyatt, but fails miserably as he repeatedly messes up every time he tries to talk to her. Suzana soon finds out what the boys are up to and decides to help. They receive creepy text messages from the mysterious men and make plans to stop them from plotting their attack on the White House.

Return to Sender, Julia Alvarez’s captivating and engrossing novel about family and friends takes through the life of two, sixth graders trying to deal with problems beyond their reach. Every moment I spent reading this book furthered my empathy for these characters. Their problems from 12 years ago are still very similar problems that we have on our planet to this day. Guided and photographic tours are a form of participatory methods, used to give outsiders inside information about key locations, as well as understanding conflicting ‘emotional- phenomenological experiences’ (Bendiner-Viani 2005). A deductive approach was taken, with the participant being instructed to identify, and document ways that food was marketed and whether this influenced their desire to dine at that restaurant. The tour was in the form of a transect walk, thus it was systematic and pre-planned, spanning Ecclesall Road, from Hunters Bar to the city centre end. Ten restaurants along Ecclesall Road were used to observe marketing techniques, and how it can change. The premeditated restaurants of interest were chosen because of key features that made them stand out based upon the marketing, including using televisions, advertisement boards and photos in the windows.…
