An interview with stationery duty manager and a survey on Emirates (Appendix 1) reveal that delays at the check-in counter because of the passenger luggage poses the biggest challenge for the airline. Significant time is spent in printing the bag tags and sorting baggage. The various procedures involved delay the loading of the baggage to the aircraft and the departure time. Considering the high level at which tracking systems and technologies have been developed, it is a surprise that airlines has not improved the tracking of its customers’ bags (Stellin). This is pronounced by the millions of dollars that airlines lose because of delays in flight departures caused by baggage delays (McCartney). However, Emirates has managed solve this by opening another hub in Dubai World Central (DWC). The construction of the DWC, in particular, was part of the $32 billion expansion project that Dubai Airports launched in September 2014 to develop the world biggest airport projected to have its ultimate capacity exceeding 200 million passengers on annual basis. The DWC was developed with Dubai Expo 2020 in mind. It is expected to have profound implications on the position of Dubai as a trade hub. The airport links Jebel Ali seaport through the Dubai Logistics Corridor and facilitates easy access to Jebel Ali, the site for the Expo 2020.
