Reflection On Polarized And Chikalwadi Slum By Amy Berg

Throughout the semester my understanding about the important issues regarding the environment has grown immensely. We have learned how people effect so many others around the world, animals, and nature. I personally have been impacted the most by issues that have negative effects on humans. These seem to trickle down to the smallest species and most unthinkable places While I saw many of these topics as important, seeing humans in conditions that were so disgusting and definitely not appropriate for anyone to be living in, was emotional. This lead to me enjoying two videos more than others, Amy Berg’s: Polarized and Chikalwadi Slum: Death and Life on the Margins. I enjoyed these two videos because they added to the reading and discussions by giving us a picture. My least favorite was World’s Largest Statue of Buddha, because the topic discussed in Chapter 1 didn’t seem to stand out as a large problem. I also enjoyed the first half of the reading compared to the second, because they seemed to get the reader more emotionally involved. If I could choose one topic or problem to fix it would be to work with the people in the slums. I work in the Market Grille inside of Hy-Vee here in Marshall. I notice about a year ago that they recycle cardboard, but no other materials. I believe this is part of a learning curve, as they just began adding restaurants to their stores two years ago. Before the change they did not have waste such as glass (alcohol containers), metal (tin cans), and food. I presented a lesson to a class after being asked by a professor. This included cutting pictures of food from magazines and sale ads. In an effort to save some of the paper waste I collected the left over materials from Hy-Vee.
