The chief architect Count Alfred von Schlieffen, was a very driven man. He was very strategic when it came to the war and their plans. Him and Helmuth Von Moltke assumed that a war was going to break out between France and Russia. Because France and Russia were allied together, the two men ensured that the two countries were going to come after them, together. Knowing the large size of Russia 's army, according to Michael Duffy, an American journalist, stated, "Schlieffen assumed - largely correctly, as it turned out - that it would take six weeks or longer for the Russians to effectively mobilise their forces..." ("Schlieffens plan" par. 3). Duffy is showing that because Russia 's army is so large and powerful, it will not take them long to successfully attack their country, Germany. With their assumptions, Schlieffen planned a strategy to knock France out of the war within those six weeks. In order to do this, he would contribute that majority of Germany to from an assault with Paris. Just in case, some German people stayed behind to hold off the Russians. Well before World War I started, Great Britain was the most powerful, richest and most dominant country there was. In fact, they had occupied such a great amount of land that their slogan was “the sun never sets on Britain.” British Imperialism was focused on upholding and expanding trade. France also had a huge hold on Africa. The amount of land Great Britain and France owned together started a rivalry with Germany. Germany had entered the scramble for land but only ended up with small parts of Africa. Because of these major countries trying to grab as much land as possible from smaller, more vulnerable countries, they were not happy about that. It was unfair to countries such as Africa and Asia. So this caused conflict between small countries and large countries. These countries that are taking over others, think that they have all the power and strength they need to conquer any country. This concept also relates to militarism. Militarism is the belief or desire of a government or people that a country should maintain a strong military capability and be prepared to use it aggressively to defend or promote national interests. So Imperialism and Militarism together, have the same idea where a country wants as much power as possible to either claim more land, or defeat any country that tries to
