Superior Essays
Health is one of the most important aspects of our daily life. If a person is in good health, then he or she will have several benefits such as their body being able to fight off numerous diseases and increase a longer lifespan. But once a person 's health starts to deteriorate because of illness, then he or she will struggle greatly and may, unfortunately, face death. Some people argue that nobody can understand what causes illness and how to treat them unless we fully understand the cultural practices, beliefs, values, and environment in which people live. But there are others who say that culture and society have nothing to do with illness and the reason why people die is they don 't have the right medical system or equipment to treat those …show more content…
This concept views that the body should be kept in balance in terms of health. For example, in China, they have created a medical system 3,500 years ago that composed of a balance between forces called yin and yang. Emily Ahern explained yin and yang in her ethnographic description stating that the body needs both hot and cold substances to create balance. So when the body is not in balance, it means that the body lacks a substance which can be restored by eating or drinking. For instance, when Ahern was about to faint because of the heat, she was told to drink a cold bamboo shoot soup to create balance in her body. Another example of yin and yang is in the winter, people tend to take more hot substances, while in the summer, people take colder substances. The human body is also viewed to have yin and yang. The yang symbolizes the living and the yin symbolizes the underworld in the shape of a tree and a house. The roof of the house represents person 's head, the walls represents the skin, and the roots of the tree represent a woman 's reproductive organs and legs. When a person is facing health problems, a shaman sends a traveler to the underworld to examine what is wrong with the person 's yin house. If the traveler sees an issue, then they will fix the yin house which will restore the yang part of the body. The yin world is also where the ghost lives and they can cause illness. If people face this issue, they must ask for help from the gods who lives in the yang

Today in day, our country argues that our population is facing a really bad health crisis. The main reason why people might argue that our country is facing a health crisis is because of the rising rates of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and high blood pressure. For example, food activist Michael Pollan argues that our country should stop relying on processed foods and should rely more on fresh organic foods. Michael Pollan also argues, “People eating a Western diet are prone to chronic diseases that seldom strike people eating more traditional diets.” In this case, I would agree with author Michael Pollan because some of the population in our country suffer from heart diseases, diabetes, and obesity.…

In the beginning there was a lot of speculation as to why people get sick and die. When diseases spread it was told to be the work of the gods and punishment for their evil deeds. One man stood against this logic and separated religion and health, and the way of living has never been the same since. “It is thus with regard divine nor more sacred than other diseases, but has a natural cause from the originates like other affections. Men regard its nature and cause as divine from ignorance and wonder...”…

The world consists of different dreams, and sometimes people refer to a dream as a “green light”; one thousand people will have one thousand different dreams - some aspire to become a successful scientist and win a Nobel Prize while some simply devote themselves to the course of helping poor children go back to school. According to the novel “the Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gatsby’s “green light” is the reunion of him and Daisy in the future. Although my “green light” is not as fancy as those “big dreams”, I do wish that all my family members can always stay healthy and live happy lives. I always agree that health is the fundamental premise for everything. Nothing can bring health back if someone has already lost it.…

This suggests that in any properly balanced human experience there will be traces of both yin and yang; therefore, yin and yang are not complete opposites, rather they are complementary entities that stem from a common origin. If a dish or two is heaty, Yang, there is always another dish that is cooling, Yin, to complement it and to maintain a Yin and Yang balance,’ said my friend’s mom whom I have interviewed about her perception on the idea of Yin and Yang. In my friend’s point of view, 'Yang is male and Yin is his counterpart. This may be arguable for the minority but it is true for most people’. ‘Yin represents the winter, the cold, the dark, still and water.…
