The World on the Turtle’s Back and The Genesis both give explanations as to why the world works in such a way. Although these creation stories come from different hemispheres of the world they share many archetypes such origin stories, temptresses and sibling rivalries. Similar Archetypes are found in a lot of literature but some of them have their own twist, which gives us more insight into their culture and beliefs.
The creator of earth in the Iroquois story is Sky woman she was the goddess who bore a daughter and walked around the tiny clod of dirt on the turtle’s back that made the earth grow larger. In the Genesis God created everything from scratch, he created the heavens, the earth, the light and etc. It is said in the Iroquois story that things such as an ocean and sky world and some animals already existed but in the Genesis God was the one and only creator and he created animals and made the man name it. In the Iroquois story Sky Woman tempts the man in to digging the tree and in Genesis Eve tempts Adam into eating the apple of knowledge. Sky woman gets cast out the sky world which is considered a paradise and Eve gets punished by childbearing becoming much more painful “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children,” (Genesis). Although Sky woman and Eve are considered temptresses their consequences differ a lot too. Sky woman was thrown out of the Sky world but she did not have any man to rule over her, she walked the earth with her daughter in peace. Eve is always going to be ruled by the man “ Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you,” (Genesis). Sky woman did not face any punishment on earth until she became an old lady in and her grandchild; the right-handed twin cut her head off because she favored the evil twin, yet she was made into moon, which is a prestigious
